Robert Halpern, former publisher of the Big Bend Sentinel, and members of his family have announced the launch of a new newspaper, Frontera News.
It is described as a member-supported, nonpartisan, online media organization. The News will cover the Trans Pecos, Big Bend Country, Far West Texas and Northern Mexico.
A non-profit in partnership with the El Paso Community Foundation, Frontera News will collaborate with the community.
Family members include Alberto Tomas Halpern, who was born in El Paso and raised in Marfa, Rosario Salgado Halpern, who was born and raised in Presidio, and Robert. He was born and raised in Alpine and grew up in a family department-store business.
Robert holds a journalism degree and worked at the Odessa American and El Paso Times before editing and publishing the Sentinel and International in Marfa until selling them recently. The announcement asks for contributions from the public.

This is it. The 80 th Annual Big Bend Livestock Association stock show and sale starts Friday but the preparation starts the day before with shearing and weigh-ins of stock show animals.
This year, the annual sale will return to the Alpine Civic Center from the Gallego Center at Sul Ross State University.
It all begins Thursday with weigh-in for hogs, lambs and goats from 4 to 6 at the school district Ag Barn and steers at Hill Top pens between 4 and 4:30. All animals must be weighed in by 6.
Friday, the lamb show begins at 9 at the Ag Barn and the goat show will begin at the conclusion of the lamb show.
The steer show will begin at 1 or at the conclusion of the goat show and the horse Show begins at 5:30 at the SALE Arena.
The swine show will be at 9 Saturday at the Ag Barn and the brand-new Rabbit Show at the conclusion of the swine show.
The awards and sale will be at the Alpine Civic Center where the buyer’s registration and buyer’s social begin at 6.
The awards program at 6:30 will include presentation of Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Buckles, Showmanship Buckles, honoree recognitions and senior recognitions.
The auction begins at 7 with Rusty Mertink returning as auctioneer.
