The Lone Star Cowboy Poetry Gathering this month in Alpine will give some attendants a look at the life of a true cowboy.
The Sul Ross State University Rodeo Team will present a demonstration rodeo from 6 to 8 Wednesday evening February 15 before the main event Friday and Saturday that week.
Sul Ross Rodeo has an illustrious history and is now led by nationally-recognized coach C.J. Aragon.
The team will “show their stuff” in a non-competitive display in the lighted and covered S.A.L.E. Arena. with poetry from David Richmond and music by Jim Wilson.
Lone Star Cowboy Poetry Gathering sponsors the event and proceeds benefit the Sul Ross Rodeo Program.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for youth 12 to 17 and free for the youngest set.
Big Bend Ranch State Park will host a Star Party in the Badlands from 6:30 to 8:30 next Friday at the West Contrabando Trailhead.
In two hours, participants will engage in orientation, star and planet gazing, constellation identification and stories of the night sky in the gold-tier International Dark Sky Park.
Those who attend will meet at the West Contrabando Trailhead where a park ranger will direct them to the star viewing area.
Dress in layers and bring flashlights, but you will not be able to use them once the Star Party begins to allow your eyes to get adjusted to the dark.
Tickets for adults 13 and older are five dollars and it is free for children age 12 and younger or those with a Texas Parks Pass.

The 13th Big Bend Big Fix Spay and Neuter Clinic will be in Alpine February 11 through the 13 for pet owners from the Big Bend and Trans Pecos Region.
Owners can get receive surgery, health and wellness checks for their pets and basic vaccines including rabies for $150 with microchips available for ten dollars extra.
Financial assistance is available and no one will be turned away for the inability to pay.
The Big Bend Big Fix is hosted by the Far West Texas Rescue Coalition and the veterinary team from Animal Balance, funded in part by a grant from the Permian Basin Area Foundation.

A series of free community workshops are being offered at the libraries in Alpine, Fort Davis, Marfa and Presidio beginning Monday.
The Rio Grande Council of Governments and Connected Nation Texas have teamed up to offer the workshops to celebrate Digital Literacy Week.
Classes will be in Computer Basics, Internet Basics and Mobile Device Basics and will be taught in both English and Spanish.
