February 3rd

Transcript:

Good evening, today is Thursday, February 3rd, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.

The Lone Star Cowboy Poetry Gathering is coming up in two weeks after having to go virtual last year for just its second year because if the pandemic.

The Lone Star Board was formed to continue the tradition after the Texas Gathering folded after more than 33 successful years.

This year’s event will be February 18 and 19 at Sul Ross State University.

But it takes a lot of people to make the Gathering happen and volunteers are being sought for several jobs.

Interested people don’t have to live in Alpine to volunteer. Some tasks can be done remotely, while other tasks will take place onsite during the event.

For more information about the Gathering and to volunteer, log onto lonestarcowboypoetry.com/volunteer.

The link is in the second bar below the image. Training will be provided for all volunteers.

The Republican candidates for Brewster County judge pitched their candidacy on Betse Esparza’s “Hear Me Out” Show this week on KVLF.

First was Greg Henington who says his strengths lie in his experience in Emergency Medical Systems and involvement in the community.

Henington: “I follow the philosophy ‘be part of the problem or part of the solution and I always want to be part of the solution.’ I got active in, for me, it was E.M.S. I became a fire chief and a paramedic. Then I served in the water board down south and served in the hospital district board.”

Henington’s main concerns included fostering tourism, ensuring a robust E.M.S. system and the educational program at Sul Ross.

Monty Kimble has served as the Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Alpine-Pecos division of the Western District of Texas, which he says gives him the skills he needs.

Kimble: “What that does for me is it gives me the ability to work your way through problems, convince juries, convince contestants or parties that are having contest and find a solution with available resources.”

Kimble’s main concerns include Sul Ross’ decreased enrollment, the tourism industry and having the County Judge operations be more transparent.

Finally, Ryan Skelton said his background in law enforcement for more than 20 years and familiarity with government procedures will help him as county judge.

Skelton: “These experiences give me a deep involvement with local government and especially with Brewster County. During my time as a chief deputy, I’ve applied to multiple grants and been awarded millions over the years.”

Skelton’s main concerns include employment in all areas in Brewster County, making sure to encourage a younger local workforce.

Esparza will have all Democrat candidates on her show on Tuesday. To listen to the show, visit hearmeoutalpine.substack.com.

Jose Alejandro Crecencio of Dallas pleaded guilty this week to transporting undocumented migrants and assaulting a federal officer at Big Bend National Park.

The 21-year-old Crecencio was parked in an S.U.V. at the Big Bend Visitor Center on November 1 when a Border Patrol agent tried to contact him.

The suspect sped away and, a short time later, the agent saw six individuals leaving the vehicle after it had stopped and disappearing into the brush.

Crecencio sped away again with the Border Patrol agent in pursuit.

A little while later, he made a U-turn and drove directly toward the agent’s vehicle, forcing the agent off the roadway.

The suspect later stopped the vehicle and fled on foot but agents were able to catch up to him and place him under arrest.

Other agents in the area were able to detain two of the six undocumented individuals who fled from the S.U.V.

Crecencio pleaded guilty to one count of transporting an illegal immigrant and one count of forcibly assaulting a federal officer.

He is scheduled to be sentenced on March 29 and faces up to five years in prison on the transporting charge and up to 20 years on the assault charge.
