Both candidates who said they will run for the Ward One Alpine City Council seat being vacated by Judy Stokes now have filed. Jennifer Peel will face Reagan Stone in the May 4 election.
This election is for local governments and others not on the regular November General Election Ballot.
City Council candidates having filed include Mayor Catherine Eaves for her second term and Eva L. Olivas for the Ward Two seat now held by Chris Rodriguez.
Two races are contested so far.
In Ward 4, former Councilor Lucy E. Escovedo faces challenger Lori A. Griffin and the Special Election for Ward One is the other.
A Marfa man has been sentenced in a federal court in Pecos to eight years in prison for one count of possession of child pornography and one count of transportation of child pornography.
F.B.I. agents executed a search warrant and discovered several photos and videos depicting child sexual abuse material belonging to 36-year-old Patricio Javier Serrano.
The material was stored on his cell phone and in his phone’s web browser.
Serrano had been a volunteer youth softball coach. He was arrested in May and has remained in federal custody.
He pleaded guilty to both charges in the indictment without a written plea agreement in October.
U.S. District Judge David Counts sentenced Serrano to three years in prison for the possession charge and five for the transportation charge. He will serve both sentences consecutively.
And a Mexican national was sentenced in a federal court in Pecos to more than 11 years in prison for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.
U.S. Border Patrol agents inspected a vehicle driven by Jorge Alberto Garcia Gamez at a checkpoint near Marfa in September.
During the inspection, agents discovered 76 vacuum-sealed bundles containing nearly 38 kilograms of methamphetamine in the vehicle’s fuel tank.
Homeland Security Investigations revealed that the 45-year-old Garcia Gamez was transporting the methamphetamine for a Mexican drug trafficking organization.
U.S. Attorney Jaime Esparza said the prosecution has taken another drug trafficker off the streets for more than a decade, further disrupting the operations of Mexican cartels.
St. James Episcopal Church of Alpine invites the public to attend a Sacred Painting class to take place over three evenings in March.
All participants will complete their own sacred image on wood panel. The dates are 6:30 Tuesday March 12 and 5:30 Thursday March 14 and Thursday March 21.
The first night offers introduction to sacred paintings, icons and imagery, night two participants will create an underpainting and the three paintings will be completed on the third night.
All materials will be provided but there will be a 50-dollar fee with all proceeds supporting the Big Bend Episcopal Mission.
Twenty spaces are available. Artistic skill is not needed, only an interest in expressing one’s spirit in art.

Un hombre de Marfa ha sido sentenciado en un tribunal federal en Pecos a ocho años de prisión por un cargo de posesión de pornografía infantil y un cargo de transporte de pornografía infantil.
Agentes del FBI ejecutaron una orden de allanamiento y descubrieron varias fotografías y videos que mostraban material de abuso sexual infantil perteneciente a Patricio Javier Serrano, de 36 años.
El material estaba almacenado en su teléfono celular y en el navegador web de su teléfono.
Serrano había sido entrenador voluntario de softbol juvenil. Fue arrestado en mayo y permanece bajo custodia federal.
Se declaró culpable de ambos cargos en la acusación sin un acuerdo de culpabilidad por escrito en octubre.
El juez federal de distrito David Counts condenó a Serrano a tres años de prisión por el cargo de posesión y cinco por el cargo de transporte. Cumplirá ambas condenas consecutivamente.
Y un ciudadano mexicano fue sentenciado en un tribunal federal en Pecos a más de 11 años de prisión por posesión con intención de distribuir metanfetamina.
Agentes de la Patrulla Fronteriza de Estados Unidos inspeccionaron un vehículo conducido por Jorge Alberto García Gámez en un puesto de control cerca de Marfa en septiembre.

La Iglesia Episcopal St. James de Alpine invita al público a asistir a una clase de Pintura Sagrada que se llevará a cabo durante tres noches en marzo.
