Good evening, today is Tuesday, February 28th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The landscape of the Big Bend region provided the inspiration for the design of the new Emmett and Miriam McCoy Building at the Museum of the Big Bend, which opens next week.
Architect Lawrence W. Speck said, in his mind, the building could not have been located anywhere else.
Speck earned his Master of Architecture from M.I.T. and has earned a number of honors and awards in design and education.
His works include the Austin Convention Center, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and many more.
He has also been profiled and mentioned in The Atlantic, The New York Times and Texas Monthly, among architectural publications in the U.S. and internationally.
Speck said the new building’s long, low, sloping roof, its solid, compact volume and its rugged, weathering material recalls both the topography and the texture of the surrounding geography.
He said it is shaped to fully take in the views of the mountains and other landscape features.
Circular indentations in the indoor event and workspaces, with properly placed windows, allows for the vistas to be carefully displayed.

Retired Fine Arts Professor Carol Fairlie will host an artist reception at 5 p.m. Saturday for her latest show “Challenges” at Catchlight Gallery.
The reception will be alongside the R-3 show next door at from 5:30 to 7:30 or until the crowds permit with food and beverages provided.
Fairlie will showcase four large paintings and nine small paintings in oil and watercolor all up for display and available for sale.
Recently retired after 26 years teaching at Sul Ross, Fairlie said that she’s filled her time completing one challenge per month in different art styles and media.
Fairlie: “I think as artist all of us like to set up challenges. I think as people in general if you do something you want to try and do it even a little better the next time or you want to bite off a little bit more next time.”
Fairlie said this most recent collection of work focused on the challenging complexities of the hands, feet and the lighting of the bone structure.
Fairlie: “Although the paintings look pretty, they look complex. But I’m actually combining images, so I’m actually very often putting four or five different images together to make it look like one scene where it’s not.”
The collection itself will already be up for display early Wednesday and last for six weeks for viewing during regular business hours.
Sheriff Ronny Dodson posted on his Facebook page Tuesday about a vehicle in the area displaying “Sheriff” markings and being operated in a suspicious manner.
The reported vehicle is a maroon pickup with “Sheriff” on the doors beneath the windows.
It is not a Brewster County Sheriff’s Office vehicle and if marked in the above manner is being operated in violation of the law.
Anyone seeing this vehicle should report it immediately including the location and direction of travel and license plate number if possible.
Dodson said he’d like to give them a ride in a real Sheriff’s Office truck.
The Big Bend Amateur Softball Association has scheduled a player showcase for 2 p.m. Sunday at Manuel Payne Field at 1500 North Fightin’ Buck Avenue.
Coaches and parents are welcome to participate and late registration will be accepted until the end of the showcase.
Participants should bring facemasks and batting helmets because fielding and hitting stations will be included.
