Lucila Fuentes Dominguez has passed away at the age of 103. Lucila was born in Shafter and lived most of her life in Marfa, before moving to San Angelo in the final years of her life.
She married Manuel Dominguez on May 28, 1940, and they shared 52 beautiful years together and raised three children, before his death in 1992.
Lucila was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and devoted homemaker. Living in Marfa, she stayed close to her family and was known as the family caregiver. In her spare time, she loved embroidering, crocheting, quilting and gardening. Her favorite thing to do was make everyone in her family Christmas stockings and embroider pillowcases and aprons.
Lucila was also a very proper, but “sassy” lady. She was always meticulously dressed and made sure everything was pressed to perfection. Her sense of humor came naturally, and she loved to tell jokes with her family. Family gatherings were an especially fun time to joke and enjoy her cokes and chocolate and desserts of any kind.
Lucila was a tremendous woman with a heart of gold, and she loved her family with a passion beyond measure.
She is survived by a daughter; five grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 15 great great grandchildren; and one great great great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be held tomorrow (SATURDAY), at 9:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marfa. Rosary services start at 10:00 a.m., and the funeral mass will begin at 10:30 a.m.
The burial will follow at Cementerio De La Merced in Marfa.

Tomorrow (SATURAY), the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute will hold their second annual Seed Swap.
To participate, bring any seeds you collected over the past year to share with others, and remember, the seeds must be native to the Trans-Pecos region, must have been harvested last fall and shouldn’t be hybrids.
The swap will be Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at CDRI.

Next week, Alpine officials hold their next city council meeting.
According to an agenda for the Tuesday meeting, city council members are set to consider a resolution expressing concern over a proposed border wall in the Big Bend area. Several counties in the region – including Brewster County – are also considering bringing similar resolutions up for vote.
During the Ward 5 Perspective on KVLF, council members Rick Stephens talked about the resolution.
STEPHENS1: “There’s going to be a proposal put forward about…affirming the importance of the Rio Grande, Big Bend National Park, and Big Bend Ranch State Park to the region’s environmental and cultural well being. There’s a resolution that council will discuss about that.” (0:17)
Council members will also discuss and potentially approve a plan to fix and update the city pool. They’ll also go over collaborating with Alpine ISD on grant funding, shared use and improvements to the historic Manuel Payne Field in Kokernot Park. And they talk about a proposed new city logo that identifies the city as the “Heart of the Big Bend Dark Sky Reserve.”

Next week, the Archives of the Big Bend will present a talk with author Joe Burgess, who will discuss his book, “Big Bend Through The Lens of Glenn Burgess: A Photo Journey in Mid-Century West Texas.”
The event is part of the archives’ yearlong celebration of its 50th anniversary.
Burgess’ book captures the creation of Big Bend National Park with highlights of the surrounding region. And as part of the event, an exhibit of Glenn Burgess’ photographic prints, field equipment and cameras, and ephemera from the early years of Big Bend National Park will be displayed at the Bryan Wildenthal Memorial Library on the Sul Ross campus.
The talk will be Thursday, March 5, at 5:30 p.m. at Sul Ross.
The yearlong celebration will feature a variety of special events and fundraising initiatives designed to highlight the Archives’ history and vision for the future.

Beginning next month (March), the city of Alpine will start accepting applications for the city’s community service grant program.
The program provides grant funding for nonprofits that provide services that benefit people in Alpine. Grant proposals must touch on any of the following areas: basic needs and services for the elderly, basic needs and services for people with lower incomes, educational resources, domestic violence and assault relief, and youth sports and recreation.
Applications can be found online at cityofalpine.com. The window to apply runs from March 9 to Friday, April 17 at 5:00 p.m.
The Community Service Grant Program is funded through the city’s general fund and is intended to support organizations whose work improves quality of life, addresses critical community needs, and aligns with the city’s priorities.

Lucila Fuentes Domínguez falleció a la edad de 103 años. Nació en Shafter y vivió la mayor parte de su vida en Marfa, antes de mudarse a San Angelo en sus últimos años de vida.
Se casó con Manuel Domínguez el 28 de mayo de 1940, y compartieron 52 hermosos años juntos, criando a tres hijos antes de su fallecimiento en 1992.
Lucila fue una hija, hermana, esposa, madre, abuela y ama de casa dedicada. Viviendo en Marfa, se mantuvo cerca de su familia y era conocida como la cuidadora de la familia. En su tiempo libre, le encantaba bordar, tejer a crochet, hacer acolchados y la jardinería. Su actividad favorita era hacer calcetines navideños para todos los miembros de su familia y bordar fundas de almohada y delantales.
Lucila era una mujer extraordinaria con un corazón de oro y amaba a su familia con una pasión inconmensurable.
Le sobreviven una hija; cinco nietos, 10 bisnietos, 15 tataranietos; un tataranieto y muchos sobrinos y sobrinas.
El velatorio se realizará mañana (SÁBADO) a las 9:00 a. m. en la Iglesia Católica de Santa María en Marfa. El rosario comenzará a las 10:00 a. m. y la misa funeral a las 10:30 a. m.
El entierro se realizará en el Cementerio De La Merced en Marfa.

Mañana (sábado), el Instituto de Investigación del Desierto Chihuahuense realizará su segundo Intercambio Anual de Semillas.
Para participar, traiga las semillas que recolectó durante el último año para compartirlas. Recuerde que deben ser nativas de la región Trans-Pecos, haber sido cosechadas el otoño pasado y no deben ser híbridas.

La próxima semana, los funcionarios de Alpine celebrarán su próxima reunión del consejo municipal.
