For nearly 50 years, researchers from the US National Park system hadn’t found any new plants. But that changed with the discovery of a fuzzy sunflower. After a chance sighting in 2024, the wooly devil, named for its fuzzy white foliage and striking crimson-striped white petals, also known as Ovicula biradiata, officially became the first new plant species and genus added to the encyclopedia in decades. Researcher, Deb Manley initially spotted the wooly devil in the north-most section of Big Bend National Park about a year ago.
The small discreet plant, which measures 1 to 3 inches across, is known colloquially to botanists as a “belly plant” as it can only be properly observed by lying on the ground. The short lived wildflower only blooms after rain. It can be found growing in harsh rocky habitats with scant rainfall, alongside a variety of drought tolerant shrubs like ocotillo, hedgehog cactus, and creosote. While the fate of the wooly devil remains to be seen, National Park tourists make their own unique discoveries by uploading their findings to the Naturalist app.
The researchers say to pay particular attention to what you find after spring rains.
The Big Bend Regional History Fair is scheduled for this Wednesday, February 26 at Sul Ross State University. The History Fair is scheduled to begin at 8:00 am and is being held in the Sul Ross State Morgan University Center. The community is cordially invited to attend to view the amazing projects that have been compiled by the students. Alpine has participants from 4th grade through high school. Other area participants include Fort Davis, Marathon, Marfa, San Vicente, and Valentine. The History Fair is always an outstanding showcase of the students’ hard work, dedication, and research. Alpine ISD had 18 students compete in the UIL solo & ensemble contest in Andrews Saturday, February 22. Every student received at least the rating of “excellent” performance but 11 of those students received the rating of “superior” and advanced to the state competition. There are 5 levels of achievement in music competition with the top 2 levels being superior and excellent. This marks the 23 rd consecutive year the Alpine Bands have sent students to the state level. The UIL State Solo & Ensemble competition is held on Memorial Day weekend in Austin.

Después de un avistamiento casual en el 2024, el diablo lanudo, llamado así por su follaje blanco difuso y sus llamativos pétalos blancos con rayas carmesí, también conocido como Ovicula biradiata, se convirtió oficialmente en la primera nueva especie y género de plantas agregado a la enciclopedia en décadas.
