Good evening, today is Thursday, February 24th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Services were Thursday for Lorenzo “Lencho” Martinez of Fort Davis, who died at home Saturday at age 85.
Visitation was Wednesday and services Thursday at Davis Mountain Funeral Home with burial at Saint Joseph Cemetery.
He was born on December 15, 1936, and raised on a ranch in Bosque Bonita, Chihuahua.
Lencho was a ranch foreman on the Altuda Ranch near Alpine.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and survived by two brothers and a sister.
Another meeting to create an ambulance service to serve Brewster and, perhaps, Presidio County has been scheduled for next week.
A task force with that goal will meet at 9:30 a.m. March 4 in the Brewster County Commissioners Courtroom.
The need arose when owner and Alpine Fire Chief Mike Scudder died suddenly December 5 after taking a patient to the Alpine hospital emergency room.
Terlingua E.M.S. Chief Greg Henington, who volunteered his service to supply the service on a four-month contract, chair the task force meeting.
The City of Alpine, county, Big Bend Regional Medical Center and Big Bend Regional Hospital District, also may be present.
Henington led a discussion earlier at a Hospital District Board meeting.
That group discussed three alternatives, letting Brewster County run it, hiring an outside contractor or creating a new bi-county ambulance service.
Monty Kimble came into KVLF Thursday to state his case for the Republican Nomination of Brewster County Judge for the March 1 primaries.
Kimble said that his experience as the Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Alpine-Pecos division of the Western District of Texas and as a business owner set him apart from other candidates.
Kimble: “Now the thing that I do bring that nobody else does is that law degree and that law experience. Everybody has some business experience, but nobody has that. And the legal aspects of this job are not insignificant.”
Kimble’s main concerns include proper management of the tourism industry, infrastructure and using his law experience to keep the county running smoothly.
Kimble: “I’m not looking for another career. I’ve had plenty of careers. I’ve been a cowboy, I’ve been a lawyer, I’ve been an assistant U.S. Attorney. But I want to make a difference, I want to come in, do this job and leave the county better off than it was when I started.”
Kimble is running for the Republican Nomination against Greg Henington and Ryan Skelton. The winner of that race faces the winner in the Democrat primary among Benjamin Barrientes, Oscar Cobos and Mimi Smith.
Alpine’s Gallery on the Square will host a Dark Skies exhibit next week to celebrate the potential membership in the Dark Sky Reserve now being created.
If it is successful, it would be the largest such reserve in the world.
Both members of Big Bend Arts Council and others may enter their artwork at the gallery on or before Tuesday.
The show will run from Thursday to April 19 with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 18. It is open to the public.
Dark Skies help scientists at McDonald Observatory study the heavens but also boosts tourism by bringing in visitors who often cannot see the stars from their light-polluted cities.
It also helps reduce power costs and provides better lighting on the ground.
During the reception, there will be demonstrations on how to determine if outdoor lighting is shining downward and illuminating the ground.
