Good evening, today is Tuesday, February 22nd, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Scott Wasserman came into KVLF to pitch his candidacy for Brewster County Justice of the Peace, Precinct One.
Wasserman has served in the Coast Guard for 14 years, graduated and taught at Sul Ross and has owned many businesses including three local ones.
He currently runs Wassermann Wranch with his wife Heidi and a small shop downtown.
Wasserman: “I’ve just got a real wide, some would say odd background, but it’s a real varied background of experience and I think I’ve got a lot of different ways to look at things that I could bring to the office.”
Wasserman said that his experiences have prepared him with the challenges that come with Justice of the Peace and feels now is the time to give back to the community.
Wasserman: “This is our home, you know? We fell in love with the area and we fell in love with the people and that’s what drew us back. It really is a special place for us and we want to keep it a special place. So if I can fill this position and be a part of this community and keep it an awesome place to live, then that’s what I want to do.”
Wasserman is running against Bob Steele for the Republican primary on March 1. There is no Democrat candidate for this race.
Brewster County deputies participated in two incidents Sunday afternoon resulting in the arrest of five in three vehicles and charges including smuggling of persons.
In one case, deputies and Border Patrol agents stopped two vehicles traveling together on Highway 118 south of Alpine.
One of the vehicles was driven by Juan Daniel Hernandez Aguilera, a citizen of Mexico, and was occupied by ten more illegal migrants including two juveniles.
The other was occupied by three U.S. citizens, including Michael Anthony Mariscal, who is a fugitive wanted in Indiana for child neglect.
Hernandez was booked into the Brewster County Jail for eight counts of smuggling of persons and two counts of smuggling of persons under 18.
Mariscal was booked into jail and is awaiting extradition to Indiana. The ten others were referred to the Border Patrol for processing and deportation.
The other U.S. citizens were released pending investigation.
The other event was at the Border Patrol station for help with another investigation into smuggling of persons.
As a result, Ashley Lea Leon and Danielle Neal were arrested for three counts each of smuggling of persons.
Neal also was charged with three more counts of smuggling of persons under 18.
Leon and Neal both were booked into the Brewster County Jail.
Our Congressman Tony Gonzales has introduced legislation to expand natural gas exports to allies and partners of the U.S.
The Expediting Natural Gas Exports to Allies Act would expand the list of countries to which the United States can export natural gas to without delay.
A companion bill has been introduced in the Senate.
Gonzales said with tensions increasing between Russia and our allies, it’s imperative that we reduce global reliance on energy from all of America’s adversaries.
The United States and our allies should not be dependent on competitors as an energy source, especially when we have an abundance of natural gas right in our backyard, he said.
Sul Ross State University has honored its Noyce Scholars who presented at the National Science Foundation’s Noyce Midwest Conference in Cave City, Kentucky.
Darissa Cervantes, Evelyn Perez, Ashley Quinones and Dr. Jennifer Miller shared Transforming Deeper Future Ready Learning Through the 4 Cs.
The Sul Ross release said that is a best practice toward integrating technology.
In addition to presenting, scholars toured Mammoth National Park.
They will work with mentors Dr. Dan Foley and Dr. Michael Ortiz to design a 5 E lesson for middle school students in STEM activities this summer at a summer camp.
