The Lone Star Cowboy Poetry Gathering’s next major meeting is Thursday through Saturday in Alpine and a popular feature is its annual Youth Poetry Contest.
Winning youth from area schools will read their entries during a special program during the Gathering.
The members of the West of the Pecos Cattlewomen got a preview of this show at their meeting in Valentine February 6.
Board member Elizabeth Baize brought some of the winners of the Youth Poetry Contest and they each presented their poems at the February Cattlewomen meeting.
Four school children from our area won first place and one placed third in the contest.
A total of 107 young residents won awards and several of the winners and a few honorable mentions will share their work at the gathering going on this weekend.
Students from Alpine, Fort Davis, Valentine, Marathon and Terlingua participated in the contest with others from as far away as Finland.
The local First Place winners were Skylar Hernandez and Alexandra Williams of Fort Davis, Kaela Baize of Marfa and Annaliese West of Marathon.
The third place winner was Chelsea Hernandez of Fort Davis.
The session with the youth poetry also will feature Maggie Rose and Jubal Hedges playing their fiddles at 11 Saturday in Lawrence Hall on the campus of Sul Ross State University.

Sul Ross State University will launch its Master of Science in Management degree, starting in the Fall pending approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
This innovative graduate program is designed to equip students with modern management skills essential for success in a rapidly evolving, post-pandemic business landscape.
The new degree is for students with liberal arts, social science and STEM backgrounds seeking to transition into the business field who might be hesitant about the all-in M.B.A.
It also is the perfect degree for students who are already in the workforce and looking for promotion into management positions.
To further enhance their professional profiles, students will earn certificates in Change Leadership and Communication as well as Strategic Leadership and Innovation.
These can be showcased immediately on resumes and professional networking platforms.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says employment for management roles is projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations over the next decade.

The City of Alpine, as it does every month, will disconnect utility services for non-payment of bills on Tuesday.
A discount and reconnect fees will of 35 dollars each will be applied for non-payment.
To avoid service disconnections and the associated fees, utility payments must be made no later than 4 p.m. Monday.
