Republican Congressman Tony Gonzales says he is being blackmailed by the husband of a former staffer who died last year by suicide.
Earlier this year, the San Antonio Express-News reported that the former staffer, Regina Santos-Aviles, told a coworker that she had an affair with the congressman. In a post on social media, Gonzales – whose district includes the Big Bend area – said it’s QUOTE “Disgusting to see people profit politically and financially off a tragic death.”
In the post, the congressman shared a screenshot of an email, which suggests a lawyer for the husband of the former staff was requesting a financial settlement in exchange for a non-disclosure agreement.

State Rep. Eddie Morales, whose district includes the Big Bend, says he has “serious concerns” about a proposed border wall in the region.
According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the wall would stretch across both Big Bend Ranch State Park and Big Bend National Park. Morales – a Democrat – is requesting that Gov. Greg Abbott urge the Trump administration to halt plans for a wall, saying the region’s steep canyons and rugged terrain have “long served as a natural barrier” in the region.
Morales says it’s “essential” to preserve the region’s natural beauty from “unnecessary militarization.”

Tomorrow (SATURDAY), the Davis Mountains State Park, Indian Lodge, and the Black Bear restaurant are hosting a job fair.
There are several openings, including cooking positions at the restaurant and custodial work at the Indian Lodge.
The job fair is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kelly Pavilion in Fort Davis.

Brewster County officials hold their next commissioners court on Tuesday, February 24.
According to an agenda for the meeting, the county judge’s report will include a review, discussion and action on a “master mutual aid agreement.”
Commissioners are also set to receive a tourism update from director Robert Alvarez.

Early voting in the March primaries continues this weekend and runs through next Friday, February 27.
In Brewster County, early voting for all precincts takes place at the Judge Val Clark Beard Complex at 203 North 7th Street in Alpine.
Tomorrow, February 21, polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. And on Sunday, you can vote anytime between noon and 6 p.m.

At the end of the month, the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute will hold their second annual Seed Swap.
To participate, bring any seeds you collected over the past year to share with others, and remember, the seeds must be native to the Trans-Pecos region, must have been harvested last fall and shouldn’t be hybrids.
The swap will be Saturday, Feb. 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at CDRI.
