The Lone Star Cowboy Poetry Board met Sunday in Alpine in a debrief of a successful Gathering over the weekend with packed houses at Marshall Auditorium.
Board Co-Chair Kay Nowell said the Lone Star’s fifth Gathering “was a fabulous success.”
Most of Sunday’s session dealt with some technical issues that came up during this year’s Gathering last Thursday through Saturday and how to deal with them next year.
A press release Sunday said attendance was very good for Saturday night show and the other ticketed shows and the thirty-nine free sessions around the Sul Ross campus.
A nearly packed audience at the Saturday show heard Andy Hedges of Lubbock perform his recent double album of duets entitled “Roll On Cowboys” live with eleven other performers.
They included the legendary Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Corb Lund, Waddie Mitchell, Brigid Reedy and more.
The release said the Gathering, the fifth by the Lone Star Board, attracted cowboy poetry fans from 34 states and at least six countries to Alpine.
The Wednesday night Show Rodeo before the Gathering raised 13 hundred and 75 dollars for the Sul Ross Rodeo Team.
The show rodeo was not listed as part of the gathering but the Lone Star Board sponsored it and the proceeds went to scholarships for Sul Ross student cowboys.
The Lone Star Board was created in 2019 to keep the tradition alive after 33 successful years by the Texas Gathering Board.
Its first in-person show was in 2020 but the Covid Pandemic forced virtual shows on film for 2021.
But it was back before audiences in 2022,2023 and this year.
The robotics team from the Big Bend High School in Terlingua competed last week at the University of Texas El Paso at the First Tech Challenge League Tournament.
The Alpine Avalanche reports that the team they call Purobots had placed sixth out of 21 schools while also earning the Connect Award.
This award is given to the team that most connects with their STEM community, for science, technology, engineering and math.
The team that wins the Connect Award actively seeks and recruits engineers and explores the opportunities that are available in the world of engineering, science, technology and math.
Brad Anthenat, who coaches the Purobots, was selected for the Compass Award, which recognizes an adult coach or mentor.
It goes to those who have provided outstanding guidance and support to a team throughout the year and demonstrates to the team what it means to be a professional.
The Alpine Business Alliance Working, which was formed to try to restore some businesses and workers lost to the Covid Pandemic, will meet Wednesday evening to take the next step.
In earlier meetings, it chose four key areas to explore and members to work in those areas.
County Judge Greg Henington will report on a “retail coach” he has hired to look into branding new and returning businesses.
City Councilor Darin Nance and A.B.A. Secretary Lisa Fielder are looking into the possibility of an Economic Development Commission.
President Jim Street is exploring getting a new Main Street Program from the Texas Historical Commission.
And Treasurer Rick Stephens is exploring funding opportunities, including leftover funds from when the Alpine Chamber of Commerce closed.
