The Alpine Police Department has posted on Facebook about the death Friday of former Police Chief Ruben Melgoza.
He started with the Police Department in 1975 as a patrolman and a few years later he was promoted to Patrol Sergeant, Assistant Chief and finished his stint as Chief of Police in 1990.
He had started on the Brewster County Sheriff’s Office before joining the Police Department and he remained in law enforcement in San Antonio after leaving Alpine.
He was born on June 30, 1942, in Brownsville and married the love of his life, Maria Elia Melgoza, on September 18, 1958, and they shared 67 years together.
Ruben was preceded in death by four brothers, a sister and one grandchild. Surviving are his wife, three daughters, a sister, eight grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 Wednesday next week in the Alpine Memorial Funeral Home Chapel at 209 West Sul Ross Avenue.
The recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 9:30 Thursday with the funeral Mass to begin at 10.

The Lone Star Cowboy Poetry Gathering’s next major meeting will be Thursday and Friday in Alpine and a popular feature is its annual Youth Poetry Contest.
Winning youth from area schools will read their entries during a special program during the Gathering.
The members of the West of the Pecos Cattlewomen got a preview of this show at their meeting in Valentine February 6. The Lone Star Board carries a story about the meeting in its regular newsletter.
Board member Elizabeth Baize brought some of the winners of the Youth Poetry Contest and they each presented their poems at the February Cattlewomen meeting.

Former Mayor Andres “Andy” Ramos has indicated he wants to be back as a member of the Alpine City Council.
Friday was the filing deadline for the May 3 City Election and Ramos will face Richard Portillo and Austin Smith for the Ward 1 seat currently held by Reagan Stone.
Only Robert Rückes has filed for Darin Nance’s seat in Ward 3. Stone and Nance did not file for re-election.
On November 5, voters amended the City Charter with 9 propositions, including going from three two-year terms for council members to two three-year terms.
The new schedule has Wards 1 and 3 this year, Ward 5 and Mayor next year and Wards 2 and 4 in 2027. The three-year cycle repeats starting in 2028.
Sul Ross State University has announced its designation as a Research College and University under the newly revised Carnegie Classifications system.
The revision marks a significant milestone for Sul Ross, elevating its status from a basic classification to recognition for its research activity and expenditures.

Erzulie Clarke, who hosts a weekly social dance class every Thursday in the Granada Theater in Alpine will present an Alpine Social Dance Workshop May 3.
Also at the Granada Theater, the couples-only workshop will be from 9 to noon the first Saturday in May for 80 dollars per couple.
Visiting Instructor will be Tommy Nations of the El Paso Ballroom Dance Academy.
