Good evening, today is Friday, February 18th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
A memorial at Elm Grove Cemetery was Friday for Cathy Corkins Neie of Alpine, who died February 9 at Midland Memorial Hospital at age 61.
She was born in Alpine on January 30, 1961, and grew up in Alpine, graduating from Alpine High School in 1979.
Cathy married her high school sweetheart Michael A. Neie on August 8, 1987, and graduated from Sul Ross State University Nursing School in 1996 as a licensed vocational nurse.
She was preceded in death by two grandchildren. Surviving are her husband, two children and two grandchildren.
The Texas A&M Forest Service is calling for increased wildfire activity through Monday in most of west and Southwest Texas.
Strong winds were forecast for our area Wednesday and even stronger Thursday. But, while strong gusts were reported Wednesday, they had dwindled by Thursday.
But our area has become quite dry with limited rainfall and an abundance of freezes.
Since Monday, local and state fire resources, including Texas A&M Forest Service firefighters, responded to 91 wildfires that burned more than seven thousand acres.
Forest Service Fire Chief Wes Moorehead said the service has increased the number of personnel, equipment and aircraft because of concern about large areas of the state.
Ryan Skelton came into the studio Friday to state his case for Brewster County Judge, the first Republican candidate in the series of interviews.
Skelton has managed his own private business, has been in the law enforcement sector and is from the area, among the achievements he cites.
Skelton: “My career has given me extensive experience with commissioner’s court, the judge’s office and county government. I’ve spent a lengthy time serving Brewster County and it’s given me the unique knowledge of the ins and outs of the history of Brewster County and the matters and events that have affected it in the last 20 or so years.”
Skelton’s main concerns include housing, infrastructure, economic development and a younger workforce. If elected, he’s looking forward to working with the commissioners.
Skelton: “You have to have the character and professionalism to be able to accommodate that and work with it to get the things that we need to get done. Once meeting with the other county officials I’d like to learn the challenges and establish priorities on what we need to address.”
Skelton is running for the Republican Nomination against Greg Henington and Monty Kimble.
The winner of that race faces the winner in the Democrats primary among Oscar Cobos, Benjamin Barrientes and Mimi Smith.
Early voting currently is underway for the March 1 Primaries.
The Big Bend Sentinel reports this week that the Rio Grande Council of Governments has adopted a new platform for receiving 911 calls.
The COG, which includes the tri-county region, reported the new technology will allow responders to more accurately pinpoint the location of callers.
Presidio County Emergency Management Coordinator Gary Mitschke believes the new system will be a vast improvement.
The COG has reached a deal with Carbyne of New York for cloud-based emergency services, which was implemented this week in Brewster and Presidio Counties.
Mitschke said the system pinpoints the location of the caller quickly and is very accurate.
When a call comes in from a cell phone, it had been located by the nearest cell tower, which could be a mile or more away.
Lara Kelsey of Carbyne said the cloud-based system will be able to locate the caller within 15 meters, helping responders find the emergency without needless delays.
