Good evening, today is Thursday, February 17th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
This week, a Mexican national was sentenced to a total of 60 months in prison for unlawfully re-entering the United States after previously being removed by immigration authorities.
Efrain Gonzalez-Vargas of Zacatecas near Mexico City was found near Big Bend National Park last August 24.
He admitted to the Border Patrol that he had entered the United States illegally by wading across the Rio Grande.
In October, the 39-year-old Gonzalez pleaded guilty to one count of illegal re-entry into the United States.
He previously had been sentenced to eight months in prison for the same offense in October 2020 and was deported.
At the sentencing hearing, evidence was presented that Gonzalez had a previous conviction in California for battery with serious bodily injury.
Gonzalez has remained in federal custody since his arrest.
Brewster County deputies made another arrest for smuggling illegal immigrants into the country this week.
The deputies made a traffic stop on Highway 385 north of Marathon and determined the driver, Mario Valdez-Alvarado, was smuggling in seven illegal immigrants.
The seven suspects were referred to the Border Patrol for processing and deportation. Valdez was booked into the Brewster County Jail on seven counts of smuggling persons.
The Lone Star Cowboy Poetry Gathering Board has announced that Craig Carter and his Spur of the Moment Band will perform at a Gathering-ending Dance Saturday night.
The “in person” Gathering will be Friday and Saturday based at Sul Ross State University after going “virtual” for only the second year for the Lone Star Board because of the pandemic.
Doors to the Alpine Civic Center will open at 9:45 p.m. Friday after the last show at Sul Ross and the “beat will go on” until 1 a.m. Sunday.

McDonalds Observatory plans a Dark Sky Festival April 29 and 30 to mark the coming of the area’s expected addition to the International Dark Sky Reserve.
Dark Sky coordinator Stephen Hummel said the festival will be at the observatory 17 miles northwest of Fort Davis from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday and noon to 8 Saturday.
Star Parties in which guests can view distant heavenly bodies will follow the party.
It will also offer tours of the site including inside looks at some of the telescopes and speakers, in his words, “from all over.”
More details will be released as the time gets closer.
Big Bend National Park is inviting people to join a ranger-guided Bird Walk throughout the weekend to help in the Great Backyard Bird Count.
The Count will run Friday through Monday with people all over the world providing information about birds by counting and watching them around their areas.
These observations help scientists better understand global bird populations before one of their annual migrations.
To participate in Big Bend National Park’s bird walks, stop at one of their visitor centers for a copy of the program schedule for specific dates and times.
If you can’t make it to the Big Bend, you can participate from your own home or your favorite birding spots and still contribute.

Esta semana, un ciudadano mexicano fue sentenciado a un total de 60 meses de prisión por reingresar ilegalmente a los Estados Unidos después de haber sido expulsado previamente por las autoridades de inmigración.
Efrain Gonzalez-Vargas de Zacatecas cerca de la Ciudad de México fue encontrado cerca del Parque Nacional Big Bend el pasado 24 de agosto.
Admitió ante la Patrulla Fronteriza que había ingresado ilegalmente a los Estados Unidos cruzando el Río Grande.
En octubre, González, de 39 años, se declaró culpable de un cargo de reingreso ilegal a Estados Unidos.
Anteriormente había sido sentenciado a ocho meses de prisión por el mismo delito en octubre de 2020 y fue deportado.
En la audiencia de sentencia, se presentó evidencia de que González tenía una condena previa en California por agresión con lesiones corporales graves.
González ha permanecido bajo custodia federal desde su arresto.
Los agentes del condado de Brewster arrestaron a otro por contrabando de extranjeros ilegales al país esta semana.
