Good evening, today is Thursday, February 16th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
More than 200 cowboy poetry fans attended the first pre-gathering demonstration rodeo at the SALE Arena Wednesday night.
The Lone Star Cowboy Poetry Gathering will be Friday and Saturday on the campus of Sul Ross State University and elsewhere in Alpine.
Coach C.J. Aragon and his Rodeo Team agreed to start this red-letter event with a non-competitive show in the lighted and covered Arena.
The popular arena now is embellished with a brand new permanent four-by-eight-foot sign donated by the Lone Star Cowboy Poetry Board.
Proceeds from the event will support the rodeo program.
The Main event will be Friday and Saturday with ticketing, merchandise sales and others at the Morgan Student Center.
Performances will be in Marshall Auditorium and elsewhere on campus and at Spicewood Restaurant west of Alpine.
The big highlight of this year’s gathering is Charlie Goodnight, His Life in Poetry and Song, the Saturday night show with Barry Corbin, Andy Wilkinson, Andy Hedges and many more.
Friday and Saturday begin with the Cowboy Breakfast at Poet’s Grove in Kokernot Park followed by 35 free sessions and six paid shows, climaxing at the Saturday Goodnight show.
Late reports say Joel Nelson had to bow out and Craig Carter will not be at his last Friday session. Other artists have been filled in and everything else is the same.

The deadline to file for Alpine city and school board elections is 5 p.m. Friday and so far, only one candidate for each City Council seat have filed for election, including two incumbents.
Ward 1 Councilor Judy Stokes has filed for her second term and former Mayor Jerry Johnson has filed for a second term in Ward 5.
Ward 3 Councilor Sarah Tandy did not file for re-election and Planning and Zoning Chair Darren Nance has filed for that seat.
In the Alpine Independent School Board election, Dr. Adrian Billings has filed for his District 6 seat and Richard Portillo will challenge him.
And Joe Portillo has filed for his Place 2 seat.
More still could file and we’ll report on Monday if any new candidates have filed for either body.
Early voting for the May 6 elections will open April 24 and run through May 2.
The Big Bend Conservation Alliance is hosting its second Walk and Ride alongside the Presidio Pour-Over Coffee Company at 10 a.m. Saturday at 600 O’Reilly Street.
Participants of all ages can ride their bikes together or walk around Presidio to enjoy a morning with coffee.
This is the second Walk and Ride of a series the Big Bend Conservation Alliance said they will try to do monthly with free drip coffee from Presidio Pour-Over Coffee Company.
Discussions around the country are reported in the news media about schools moving to a four-day week, giving students and staff a three-day weekend.
The Big Bend Sentinel reports that Marfa schools will begin a schedule like that with a three-day weekend for students, and Friday as a flexible workday for teachers and other staff.
The School Board made that decision this week in a meeting where teachers and administrators supported the new schedule.
They have said teachers need more preparation time and students often need more individualized instruction.
They said the change would address challenges like declining enrollment, low attendance rates and teacher retention and recruitment.
Junior High and High School Principal Luane Porter told the paper every single teacher wants to provide the very best education for their students.
The plan would give them extra time to plan, prepare, grade and everything else they normally have to do on evenings and weekends.
