The Lone Star Cowboy Poetry Gathering has called a press conference for Thursday afternoon in the lobby of The Holland Hotel to kick off this week’s gathering.
The Gathering will be at Sul Ross State University starting Thursday evening and runs through Saturday after a Sul Ross show Rodeo Wednesday evening.
The event brings together cowboy poets, musicians and enthusiasts from across the Lone Star State and beyond.
Event Producer Bob Saul, a cowboy at heart with roots in generations of ranching, said a feeling of family has become synonymous with the gathering.
Saul took the reins as the event producer five years ago after a 33-year legacy of the Texas Cowboy Poetry Gathering.
Event Co-Chair Kay Nowel has been involved with cowboy poetry since the first National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada, in 1985.
She said it had been a great privilege to get to know and work with many of the poets and musicians in the cowboy poetry genre.
The Gathering includes seven ticketed shows in Marshall Auditorium and 35 free shows hosted in seven classrooms across the Sul Ross campus.
The featured Saturday night show will be hosted by the legendary Andy Hedges, capping off the event with some 40 folk legends from the Gathering performers.

Alpine High School will host the First Annual College and Career Job Placement Fair at Alpine High School from 7:30 to noon Friday.
It will partner with ACCESS and Workforce Solutions Borderplex and local and regional businesses, industries, city and county.
The fair is to connect Alpine High School graduating seniors with military recruiters and local workforce opportunities.
All A.H.S. students will have the opportunity to network with participating businesses, industries and higher education institutions.
Some of them include Texas Tech University Health Science Center, Sul Ross State University, Texas State Technical College, Big Bend Regional Medical Center and the City of Alpine.
Others are Brewster County, Big Bend Telephone, TransPecos Banks and U.S. Army and Marine Corps, among many others.

Sheriff Ronny Dodson has posted on Facebook an introduction to Jonathan Portillo, the new chaplain for the Brewster County Jail.
Jonathan and his wife Mandy will oversee the inmate ministry, where all denominations will be served.
Dodson asked those interested in ministering at the jail to contact Jonathan Portillo at the Sheriff’s office at 834-3488.

You can support Alpine Public Library and enjoy a catfish dinner prepared by the Alpine American Legion at the Fish Fry Fundraiser from 5 to 7 March 8 at Legion Hall.
The event will feature live music from the Swifts and A Few Too Many. Tickets are available at Alpine Public Library for 15 dollars each.
