Carolina Nieto Bustamante of Presidio, Texas, passed away earlier this month at home in Presidio. She was 80.
Carolina was born in San Carlos, Chihuahua, Mexico, to Reymundo and Josefina Nieto on May 5, 1945. She went to school in Ojinaga and Juárez, where she studied business and accounting. She worked as a news announcer for radio station XEOG in Ojinaga for several years in the 1960s.
In her youth she was a model, a medical assistant, an accountant, and she even officiated marriages when she worked at the Presidencia Municipal in Ojinaga. She married Licenciado Jaime Antunez in 1971 in Ojinaga and Julian Bustamante in 2005.
Carolina is survived by her husband, Julian Bustamante, two children, a brother, and seven grandchildren.
Carolina’s family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to all the friends and family who supported her and encouraged her through her long battle with cancer, which she fought with unwavering courage and resolve.

A reminder – On Monday, February 16, the city of Alpine will be closed in recognition of President’s Day.
City offices will resume their regular schedule on Tuesday, February 17, from 8:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Next week, the Alpine ISD board of trustees holds their next meeting.
According to an agenda for the meeting, trustees will receive an update on the Big Bend Rural Initiative for Success in Education, also known as “BB-RISE.” The program is a partnership across multiple districts including Marfa, Alpine and Marathon that connects schools with higher education institutions and industries to provide rural students with college and career paths.
The district’s trustees meet Wednesday, February 18 at the Alpine ISD administration building, located at 704 W. Sul Ross Ave.

Next week, Big Bend Health will hold a community town hall on the future of healthcare in the region.
New healthcare funding is coming to rural communities, and Big Bend Health is hosting the meeting to hear from residents on how to improve local services.
The town hall is open to the public, and you don’t have to RSVP to attend.
It will be held Tuesday, February 17 at the Alpine Public Library from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Next week, the Small Business Development Center at Sul Ross State University will host several training opportunities for business owners.
In the first hands-on training, you’ll learn how to efficiently film and edit short-form videos using tools that are straightforward for anyone with a small business. You’ll go through lighting setups, editing tools and how to title your videos to get the most views.
The webinar is Tuesday, February 17 from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m.
Then on Wednesday, February 18, you’ll get a crash course in improving individual and team performance. This one-hour talk will introduce you to outcome management and how it’s one of the most important processes that teams or individuals need to manage for success and growth.
That training is from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.

Next week, the group Keep Alpine Beautiful is giving away trees to help keep Alpine green!
The giveaway is next Saturday, February 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kokernot Park.
Anyone in the community is welcome to pick up one free tree per vehicle.

Carolina Nieto Bustamante, de Presidio, Texas, falleció a principios de este mes en su hogar en Presidio. Tenía 80 años.
Carolina nació en San Carlos, Chihuahua, México, hija de Reymundo y Josefina Nieto, el 5 de mayo de 1945. Estudió administración de empresas y contabilidad en Ojinaga y Ciudad Juárez. Trabajó como locutora de noticias para la estación de radio XEOG en Ojinaga durante varios años en la década de 1960.
En su juventud, fue modelo, asistente médica, contadora e incluso ofició matrimonios cuando trabajaba en la Presidencia Municipal de Ojinaga. Se casó con el licenciado Jaime Antúnez en 1971 en Ojinaga y con Julián Bustamante en 2005.
Le sobreviven su esposo, Julián Bustamante, dos hijos, un hermano y siete nietos.
La familia de Carolina desea extender su más sincero agradecimiento a todos los amigos y familiares que la apoyaron y animaron durante su larga batalla contra el cáncer, que luchó con inquebrantable coraje y determinación.

La próxima semana, la junta directiva del Distrito Escolar Independiente de Alpine celebrará su próxima reunión.
Según la agenda de la reunión, los miembros de la junta recibirán información actualizada sobre la Iniciativa Rural de Big Bend para el Éxito Educativo, también conocida como “BB-RISE”. La próxima semana, el Centro de Desarrollo de Pequeñas Empresas de la Universidad Estatal Sul Ross ofrecerá varias capacitaciones para empresarios.

El miércoles 18 de febrero, recibirá un curso intensivo sobre cómo mejorar el rendimiento individual y de equipo. Esta charla de una hora le presentará la gestión de resultados y cómo es uno de los procesos más importantes que los equipos o individuos deben gestionar para alcanzar el éxito y el crecimiento.
Esta capacitación se realizará de 10:00 a 11:00.
