Jean Ann Wagoner Ragland of Alpine passed away on February 6 at Odessa Regional Medical Center. She was 87.
Jean was born in Arlington, Texas, to Robert and Emma Wagoner. She fell in love and married Bobby Ragland in 1957, and together they made their home in Mansfield, Texas, before retiring to Alpine in 1980.
Both her father and her husband were cattle ranchers, a way of life that deeply shaped Jean’s appreciation for hard work, faith, and the land.
Jean loved her mountain views and cherished the quiet beauty of Alpine, which she proudly called home for 46 years. She was a devoted member of the Alpine Church of Christ, where she found community and friendship.
She is survived by her two children, three grandchildren, three nephews, as well as numerous friends and her beloved church family.
Jean will be remembered for her strong spirit, deep faith, and devotion to her family, her church, and the West Texas landscape she so dearly loved.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff of Big Bend Regional Medical Center and Odessa Regional Medical Center for their kindness, compassion, and care.

This Friday, Marfa writer and poet William Benton will be at Front Street Books for a reading of his work.
In an interview with KVLF, Benton talked about tomorrow’s (FRIDAY’S) event, which will include both old and new work.
BENTON1: “The three books that are going to be featured are “Madly,” a novel I wrote – obviously that title is sort of a Valentine’s Day title. And one book that I’m going to read from is “Marmalade,” which is essentially translations from the great French poet Stéphane Mallarmé.” (0:20)
Benton says he’s been a poet for much of his life, but he’s also written fiction, art criticism and is an accomplished piano player as well. He said his time playing music translates in a way to his written work.
BENTON2: “You have to have a pretty good ear to write poetry, it’s not song lyrics you’re writing. You’re writing something that has an inherent music of its own. And so in that sense, I probably had some harmonic advantage in a way.” (0:20)

Next week, city officials will hold a workshop to discuss an ordinance for regulating the use of golf carts, so-called “pocket bikes,” and mini-motorbikes within the city.
The workshop starts at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 17 at city council chambers.
Afterwards, officials will hold the next city council meeting, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
On the agenda is a resolution adopting the city’s community services grant program policy and application. Officials will also discuss and review updates to a potential new logo for the city of Alpine.

This month, the Alpine Humane Society will hold a fundraiser to help bring a vet clinic to Terlingua.
The clinic will provide spaying, neutering, vaccinations and microchipping services for south county residents.
The fundraiser will be Sunday, February 22 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Venga. There will be food, music, a cash-bar, a pet costume contest and other activities.

Next month, Sul Ross State University will hold a career fair for students looking for part-time, full-time, and internship work.
The career fair will be held Tuesday, March 3 at the Morgan University Center – on the first and second floors – from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
The event is free and open to anyone in the community, whether they would like to attend or host a table.

Este mes, la Sociedad Protectora de Animales de Alpine organizará una recaudación de fondos para traer una clínica veterinaria a Terlingua.
La clínica ofrecerá servicios de esterilización, castración, vacunación e implantación de microchips a los residentes del sur del condado.
La recaudación de fondos se llevará a cabo el domingo 22 de febrero de 6:00 a 9:00 en Venga. Habrá comida, música, barra libre, concurso de disfraces para mascotas y otras actividades.
