Brewster County Commissioners, meeting in Study Butte Tuesday, took two steps closer to having a health clinic to serve South County.
Two action items were listed as A. and B. on one agenda item and both were approved unanimously.
Item A. was approval to fund up to 150 thousand dollars to buy a skid-mounted portable building to house the clinic that would be open five days a week after about a year and a half.
County Judge Greg Henington said the new building will be red and later pointed out its location, visible from the J.W. “Red Patillo” Center where commissioners met.
He said the provider will be selected in a few days and told us there may be only one or two people who could do that work and they may get only one bid.
Item B. was up to 50 thousand dollars to acquire services including septic, water, telephone, Internet and electricity for the new building.
In other action, the court approved a letter of engagement from Singleton, Clark and Company of Alpine and approved 90 thousand dollars for the 2023 Fiscal Year outside audit.
County Emergency Coordinator and Alpine Fire Chief James Etchison said the county burn ban remains in effect and that Brewster County is the “the driest in Texas.”
He said people needing a prescribed burn permit should contact him at 432/538-2106.
The Big Bend Arts Council’s next members’ meeting has been scheduled for this Sunday, February 16. But instead of a meeting, the council plans an informal “Show and Tell.”
It will be for completed work or a work in-progress and it will be at the Big Bend Gallery since only a few chairs will be needed and the environment is more art forward than the Food Pantry.
Artists are invited to come on out on Sunday, drop in, drop out, have a cup of tea or coffee and socialize.
They also should bring a piece of their art they would like to show off.
And the Council has announced “Jeff Davis County Images,” a depictions of landscapes, animals, plants, people, structures and still lifes, will be March 1 through April 26.
It will be at the Overland Trail Museum at 511 North Fort Street in Fort Davis.
Take-In will be from 10 to 5 Wednesday, February 26, and the reception will be 5 to 8 Saturday, March 1.
Artist can pick up their paintings from 10 to 5 Wednesday, April 30.

The Marfa Police Department is seeking applicants for a full-time Patrol Officer and a full-time School Resource Officer.

The Big Bend Sentinel reports this week that the popular bar Harry’s Tinaja will reopen this spring after sitting idle since the death of its owner Harry Mois (Mwah) in September, 2022.
Railroad Blues owner Tim Wilson bought the Tinaja last year and has filed for his permit from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission.
Wilson said Harry’s bar had a loyal following and he hopes to bring it back but with new picnic tables. Otherwise, it will be unchanged, he said.
Besides the Blues, Wilson has other bars in El Paso and New Mexico. He lives in El Paso but frequents Alpine often.
The Tinaja was a popular watering hole on East Holland Avenue known for its front awning with rows of logs adorned with animal skulls and horns and friendly atmosphere.
It had a small bar room inside and a large patio and many guests chose to sip their beer and wine outside in the elements.
Wilson said he plans to keep everything pretty much as it was before Harry died.

Y el Consejo ha anunciado “Imágenes del condado de Jeff Davis”, representaciones de paisajes, animales, plantas, personas, estructuras y naturalezas muertas, que estarán disponibles del 1ro de marzo al 26 de abril.
Será en el Overland Trail Museum en North Fort Street 511 en Fort Davis.
El Take-In será de 10 a 5 el miércoles 26 de febrero y la recepción será de 5 a 8 el sábado 1ro de marzo.
El artista podrá recoger sus cuadros de 10 a 5 del miércoles 30 de abril.

El propietario de Railroad Blues, Tim Wilson, compró el Tinaja el año pasado y solicitó su permiso ante la Comisión de Bebidas Alcohólicas de Texas.
Wilson dijo que el bar de Harry tenía seguidores leales y espera recuperarlo, pero con nuevas mesas de picnic. De lo contrario, se mantendrá sin cambios, afirmó.

La Tinaja era un bar popular en East Holland conocido por su toldo delantero con hileras de troncos adornados con cráneos y cuernos de animales y una atmósfera amigable.
Tenía una pequeña sala de bar en el interior y un gran patio y muchos invitados optaron por tomar cerveza y vino al aire libre bajo los elementos. Wilson dijo que planea mantener todo prácticamente como estaba antes de la muerte de Harry..
