Good evening, today is Monday, February 14th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Services will be Friday and Saturday for James William “Cordell” Lewis of Marfa, who died January 25 in Houston at age 25.
Visitation will 10 to 5 Friday and Praying of the Most Holy Rosary will be at 7 at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marfa with Father Victorino Loresca officiating and internment will follow at Merced Cemetery in Marfa.
Cordell was born on September 26, 1996, in Alpine, was a graduate from Marfa High School and attended Sul Ross State University. He was a member of the Methodist Church.
Cordell is survived by his parents, a grandmother, five sisters and two brothers.
We just got word at airtime that the Fort Stockton man who was last seen in Big Bend National Park with his daughter have been located in Mexico.
We have contacted the U.S. Border Patrol but have not heard back to confirm the report.
On January 28, 49-year-old Hector Flores, Jr., and his nine-year-old daughter Luna traveled from Fort Stockton in his pickup.
The truck was found later abandoned along the northern end of the remote Old Ore Road with many of their personal belongings inside.
They are believed to have been traveling on foot and may not have had the proper clothing or equipment to camp inside the park.
We hope to get conformation of their finding and more details soon.
The Lone Star Cowboy Poetry Gathering is back in person this weekend with more than 40 scheduled performers who know cowboy life from the inside.
It had to go virtual last year because of shutdowns resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Lone Star Board was formed in 2019 when the Texas Cowboy Poetry Gathering board retired after 33 successful years.
The new Lone Star board dedicated itself to “keeping the tradition alive” and offered many on-line performances last year while unable to have an in-person event.
The first Gathering, just before the pandemic struck with vigor, was the organization’s first event. This will be the second one in person.
Chuckwagon breakfasts Friday and Saturday at Poet’s Grove in Kokernot Grove kick off the two-day event each day with most of the activity at Sul Ross State University.
Headquarters will be at the University Center.
Performers include Gail Steiger, Joel Nelson, Randy Rieman, Randy Huston and Kristyn Harris among many others.

Oscar Cobos came into the studio Monday to state his case for Brewster County Judge, kicking off the series on KVLF of the candidates interviewing about the election.
Cobos has had a large role in the community and sees this position as the next step in representing the people of Alpine where he was raised.
Cobos: “This position, you don’t have to have a law degree or this or that, it’s common sense. It’s a passion for the people, taking the initiative on leadership positions whether property rights, health, safety and welfare.”
Cobos has been involved in city and county government in various issues throughout his lifetime.
Cobos: “I would love to see areas of improvement, expansion in the areas that are social, whether libraries, housing, health. Those are my areas of thinking for the people especially right now.”
Cobos is running for the Democrat nomination against Benjamin Barrientes and Mimi Smith.
The winner of that race faces the winner in the Republicans Primary among Greg Henington, Monty Kimble and Ryan Skelton.
Early voting currently is underway for the March 1 Primaries.
