Services will be Wednesday for Manuel Gallego Ybarra, also known as Manny, Mel or Popo, who died Saturday at home surrounded by his family.
Visitation will be at 9 followed by Rosary at 9:30 and Mass beginning at 10. Burial will follow at Holy Angels Cemetery.
Manny was born on May 8, 1939, in Manuel Benavides, Chihuahua, and later made his home in Alpine.
He began his career with Coca-Cola in delivery and sales before transitioning into the chemical sales industry.
Outside of work, Manuel had a passion for music and was part of a mariachi group. He liked to sing and work outdoors in his yard. He also enjoyed poker, board games and bowling, fishing and was a fan of the Miami Dolphins.
Manuel was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters. Surviving are his wife Maria, three sons, a daughter and two great grandchildren.
Distinguished alumni, athletes and friends of Sul Ross State University will be inducted into the Hall of Honor during the 37 th Annual Celebration on Saturday, March 29. Ten inductees make up this year’s class.
They are nominated and then chosen by the Sul Ross Alumni Association, the Department of Athletics and the College of Agriculture, Life and Physical Sciences.
Inductees include Frederick Carter, Class of 1979 and 83, Malia Ann Perez, Class of 2002 and 6, Glenn Losoya, Class of 2014 and Francis Jones, Class of 1989 and 91.
Others are Caleb Thomasson, Class of 2018, Shane Zimmerman, Class of 1999 and 2002, Wade Zimmerman, Class of 2001 and 2 and Josefina Sanchez Contreras, Class of 1997.
Rounding out the winners are Sally Oglesby, Class of 1979 and Wade Smith, posthumously, Class of 1979. The event will be at the Pete P. Gallego Center on the Alpine campus. It begins with a cocktail reception at 6, followed by dinner and the ceremony.
Tickets are 75 dollars for adults and 25 for children under 12.
Gold level sponsor tables include four tickets for a thousand dollars and Platinum level sponsor tables include eight tickets for 25 hundred. Purchases can be made online at sulross.edu/alumni.
The Lone Star Cowboy Poetry Gathering Board has announced that tickets to the next gathering February 20 to 22 in Alpine are now on sale to everyone.
All seven paid shows in Marshall Auditorium are using reserved seating so if you really want to see the show, you should register now.
Among the programs are Western Voices, the Thursday night show with Joel Nelson of Alpine along with Juni Fisher, Amy Hale and Kristyn Harris.
Another is Out Under the Stars, the Friday night show with Randy Rieman, Brigid and Johnny Reedy, R.P. Smith and Brenn Hill.
The Gathering is centered at Sul Ross State University but events will be elsewhere in the Alpine area.
Kay Nowell (rhymes with Powell), Co-Chair and Treasurer of the Lone Star Board, suggested guests come early, stay longer and treasure the natural beauty of our area.
She suggested a visit to the Museum of the Big Bend, Big Bend National Park, the McDonald Observatory or the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute near Fort Davis.
