Good evening, today is Thursday, February 10th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The Alpine Downtown Association Wednesday discussed ways to respond to the needs of Alpine businesses to create a profitable and robust business community.
New President Conley Rasor said a new direction could make the association more meaningful to its target clientele and suggested several ways to do that.
He suggested instead of regular monthly meetings, the association should have two major meetings a year, combined with a mixer, to encourage attendance.
An Executive Committee could meet quarterly to deal with association needs.
He also suggested renaming it to make it clearly known it is for all of Alpine.
Outgoing president and founder Jim Street said at the organizational meeting, the name Alpine Downtown Association was widely favored by those present.
The problem with that name is that many businesses, including several of our major ones, are not downtown.
Rasor said a new name might help bring them into the fold, widening the reach of the organization.
J.D. Newsom suggested the first step was a strategic plan broad enough yet specific in certain areas to refine their mission.
That should be done before we rebrand or consider a new name, he said.
Newsom said we should join with other organizations, not asking how they can help the A.D.A. but how it can help them with their programs.
Rasor said he would put out a call to the community for ideas.

The Big Bend Conservation Alliance has posted photos on the Alpine Downtown Association Facebook page with ways to comply with the new Dark Skies rules.
The Alliance offers an incentive program for residents to swap out old mercury vapor guard lights with newer sodium lights with “cobra heads.”
Mercury vapor lights are some of the worst emitters of light pollution.
The revised ordinance was enacted to help the area become a member of a Dark Skies Reserve that, if approved, would be the largest in the world.
It is aimed at helping scientists at McDonald Observatory near Fort Davis to better study the heavens.
But the newer lights are proving to be more effective at improving lighting on the ground, instead of into the air, and reducing costs at the same time.

Amistad, a creation of the League of United Latin American Citizens, will be in Alpine Friday to promote assistance with the healthcare marketplace for all who qualify.
Amistad offers assistance to families year-round and encourages anyone in Alpine to attend or to reach out for a virtual appointment.
The deadline to register has passed but Amistad Navigators will help those who might still qualify for health insurance through special qualifications.
The enrollment will be from 9 to 11 Thursday morning at the Sul Ross University Center.
Services will also be in Spanish and attendees are encouraged to call 915/298-1175 for more information or to schedule a virtual appointment if they are unable to attend.

The Alpine Public Library will host the next Alpine’s Talented Stars talent show, now for adults and children for the first time, to be at 5 p.m. April 9.
Performers will compete for trophies in four categories.
They include kids highest vote getter, adults highest vote getter, highest vote getter on the night of the event and highest overall vote getter.
Performers can solicit votes from friends and family before the event and the library will provide an online voting option with one vote costing five dollars.
Those 15 and under will perform first at 5:15 p.m. with adults 16 and up performing afterwards. Mixed age groups will compete in the adult category.

La asociación del centro de Alpine discutió el miércoles formas de responder a las necesidades de las empresas de Alpine para crear una comunidad empresarial rentable y sólida.
El nuevo presidente Conley Rasor dijo que una nueva dirección podría hacer que la asociación fuera más significativa para su clientela objetivo y sugirió varias formas de hacerlo.
Sugirió que en lugar de reuniones mensuales regulares, la asociación debería tener dos reuniones principales al año, combinadas con una reunión mixta, para fomentar la asistencia.
Un Comité Ejecutivo podría reunirse trimestralmente para tratar las necesidades de la asociación.
También sugirió cambiarle el nombre para que se sepa claramente que es para todo Alpine.
El presidente y fundador saliente, Jim Street, dijo en la reunión organizativa que el nombre Alpine Downtown Association fue ampliamente favorecido por los presentes.
El problema con ese nombre es que muchas empresas, incluidas varias de las principales, no están en el centro.
