At today’s (TUESDAY’S) Brewster County Commissioners meeting, the city updated county officials about Alpine’s next city manager.
Ward 5 representative Rick Stephens told commissioners that Henry Arredondo was offered the role just last week.
STEPHENS1: “A little bit back about Henry. We interviewed him last Tuesday. Sul Ross graduate – master’s degree from Sul Ross. He has family in Terlingua. And he’s been in city administration for about 10 years.” (0:13)
Arredondo is the current city administrator for Dilley, Texas. Stephens said the city expects him to start the role after the first of the year.

Before today’s (TUESDAY’S) commissioners meeting, city and county officials met to discuss the future of emergency medical services in the region.
County Judge Greg Henington said a task force has been created to address the issue.
HENINGTON1: “Our plan is to be in front of the two bodies of government by the end of February, the first part of March, with a recommendation on what we want to do regarding EMS.” (0:11)
The taskforce is set to hold several town halls early next year on the EMS issue
The first will be Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 6 p.m. at the civic center.

Next week, children throughout the Big Bend have a chance to contact Santa Claus at the North Pole by shortwave radio.
On Wednesday, Dec. 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. head to the True Value Hardware store in Alpine. There, members of the Big Bend Amateur Radio Club will help children talk to Saint Nick via shortwave radio.
Dress warmly and head to True Value between 5 and 7 p.m. to have your chance to contact the North Pole in person.

Next week, Michael’s Mountain Ministry of Alpine will hold their annual live nativity.
On Dec. 19, 20 and the 21, head to the stable area by Kokernot Lodge for live performances, beginning each evening at 7.
There will be coffee, hot chocolate and cookies served to members of the audience and participants after each night’s performance.
And on Saturday, Dec. 20, the Big Bend Children’s Chorus will entertain with Christmas carols before the nativity performance.

This month, the Sunshine House in Alpine will hold a free health clinic.
On Monday, Dec. 22, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the clinic will offer general checkups and consultations, EKG screenings, and ultrasound screenings.
The Sunshinehouse is located at 402 E. Holland Ave.

Birders of all skills are invited to help survey the birds in Big Bend Ranch State Park later this month.
Big Bend Ranch is hosting its own Christmas bird count, which will take place within the low Chihuahuan Desert region. Guides will use several standard driving routes, along with hiking paths, specialized routes for four-wheeled vehicles, and even horseback-accessible routes – all in effort of counting the region’s birds.
The bird county takes place Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 6 a.m. Participants will first meet at Fort Leaton State Historical Site before heading out.

En la reunión de hoy (MARTES) de los Comisionados del Condado de Brewster, la ciudad informó a los funcionarios del condado sobre el próximo administrador municipal de Alpine.
El representante del Distrito 5, Rick Stephens, informó a los comisionados que a Henry Arredondo se le ofreció el puesto la semana pasada.

Antes de la reunión de comisionados de hoy (MARTES), funcionarios de la ciudad y del condado se reunieron para debatir el futuro de los servicios médicos de emergencia en la región.
El juez del condado, Greg Henington, anunció la creación de un grupo de trabajo para abordar el problema.
cito: “Nuestro plan es presentarnos ante ambos organismos de gobierno a finales de febrero o principios de marzo, con una recomendación sobre lo que queremos hacer con respecto a los SEM”.
El grupo de trabajo tiene previsto celebrar varias reuniones públicas a principios del próximo año sobre el tema de los SEM.
La primera será el miércoles 21 de enero a las 6:00 en el centro cívico.

El miércoles 17 de diciembre, de 5:00 a 7:00, acudan a la ferretería True Value en Alpine. Allí, miembros del Club de Radioaficionados de Big Bend ayudarán a los niños a comunicarse con Papá Noel por radio de onda corta.

Se invita a observadores de aves de todos los niveles a participar en el censo de aves del Parque Estatal Big Bend Ranch a finales de este mes.
Big Bend Ranch organizará su propio conteo navideño de aves, que se llevará a cabo en la región del Desierto Chihuahuense Bajo. Los guías utilizarán diversas rutas de conducción habituales, además de senderos para senderismo, rutas especiales para vehículos de cuatro ruedas e incluso rutas accesibles a caballo, todo con el objetivo de contabilizar las aves de la región.
El conteo de aves se llevará a cabo el martes 2 de diciembre a las 6:00 a. m. Los participantes se reunirán primero en el Sitio Histórico Estatal de Fort Leaton antes de partir.
