Alpine Elementary School sent 45 students to this year’s U.I.L. Meet in Kermit and brought back six first-place awards.
Among those were three by Alia Jean Tackett-Schaefer, who also placed first overall.
Also at the meet were Kermit and Presidio I.S.D.s competing in nine challenging events.
Giselle Luevano, the second grade English Language Arts teacher and the U.I.L. coordinator for Alpine, said she was proud of all her students.
Alpine students earned placements in most events, showcasing their hard work and determination over the past several months, she said.
Luevano said while Alpine did not place in every event, the students’ hard work and dedication were evident across the board.
She said the district is incredibly proud of its students, coaches and families for their efforts and achievements during this year’s meet.
They represented Alpine with great pride and determination, she said.
A special shoutout goes to Mrs. Alex Tackett and Mrs. Amber Cayton for traveling all the way to Kermit to support our students, Luevano said. Presidio Elementary emerged as the overall champions with Alpine Elementary earning the Runner-Up title.
Our Congressman Tony Gonzales was on the Newsmax T.V. program “The Record with Greta Van Susteren” Thursday talking about the four-year crisis on the Southern Border.
He also wrote about it in an editorial page submission to the Alpine Avalanche.
He said the Biden Administration created the worst border crisis in our nation’s history.
Gonzales, who represents the longest stretch of the border in Texas, wrote that the border has become ground zero for illegal immigration.
He started a big national discussion by seeking specific answers from the Administration about how many crossers had criminal records.
Six months later, the reply was that more than 660 thousand had criminal records, including more than 100 thousand with assault charges.
But in addition to that, more than 13 thousand of them had been charged with murder and some 16 thousand with sexual assault charges.
John “Jeff” F. Fort III, a long-time supporter of the Center for Big Bend Studies at Sul Ross State University, will be conferred with an Honorary Doctorate degree next week.
The degree in Humane Letters will be conferred at commencement exercises at 5:30 next Friday at the Gallego Center.
The resolution was presented to the Texas State University System Board of Regents last summer underscoring Fort’s significant support, generosity and his continued philanthropy.
He has been the Center for Big Bend Studies’ most consequential supporter for more than 20 years, the resolution states.
It notes that Fort has graciously opened his properties, provided critical financial resources and actively promoted the Center’s programs to the public and local land stewards,
At the same time, he has remained an active scholar in anthropology.

Community members have been invited to participate in this year’s Hometown Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 21.
Backers say decorated cars, trucks, trailers, horses, dogs or whatever will be welcomed as participants.
The lineup for the parade will start at 5 at City Hall and it will step off at 6 and end with a Grand Finale at the Alpine Visitor Center at Avenue E and 3rd Street.
The Big Bend Community Band will perform and there will be refreshments and pictures with Santa.

Entre ellos hubo 3 de Alia Jean Tackett-Schaefer, quien tambien ocupo el primer lugar en la general.
También en la reunión estuvieron Kermit y Presidio I.S.D. compitiendo en nueve eventos desafiantes.
