Presidio County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call of a hunting accident Sunday and discovered a 15-year-old male dying of a gunshot wound.
The youth was fatally shot in the chest while preparing rifles to go hunting several miles north of Presidio in a well-known hunting area west of Highway 67.
Family members immediately transported the victim to Marfa in a personal vehicle escorted by deputies where they met with the Marfa Ambulance that took them to the Alpine hospital.
Despite efforts to revive him, the victim was declared dead on arrival. The family was on their yearly hunting trip to Presidio County.
Names were withheld with respect to the family. The case was referred to the Texas Rangers for further investigation.
Benjamine C. Huffman, a graduate of Sul Ross State University with a long border patrol career, will deliver the fall commencement address for the Alpine campus at 5:30 December 15.
A west Texas native, Huffman will speak at the ceremony in the Pete P. Gallego Center on the Alpine campus.
He holds a master's degree in Homeland Security and a bachelor’s degree in general studies from Sul Ross.
He also has completed the Capstone General and Flag Officer course at the National Defense University and the Senior Managers in Government program at the Harvard Kennedy School.
Huffman leads the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Law Enforcement Centers where he oversees training for 125 federal partner organizations.
It also trains state, local, tribal, territorial and international law enforcement partners.
There, he directs operations at Glynco, Georgia, Charleston, South Carolina, Cheltenham, Maryland and Artesia, New Mexico.
Our Congressman Tony Gonzales has scheduled a telephone town hall meeting for 6 Wednesday evening with Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick.
They will discuss the situation on the Texas-Mexico border and measures Gonzales is working on the in the Congress.

The City of Marfa and the Marfa Police Department have joined other law enforcement agencies in the area with their own 2023 Blue Santa Food and Toy Drive.
Admission will be a non-perishable food item or an unwrapped toy.
The event will include cookies and cocoa, a dance with D.J. La Única, and pictures with Blue Santa starting at 6:30 December 15 at the U.S.O. building at 302 South Highland.
Every year, law enforcement agencies in the area have their own Blue or Brown Santa Drives with Santa’s color matching blue for police and brown for sheriff departments.
After a busy pre-Christmas weekend, several other activities have been announced for the Christmas season and surely more will be announced as the magic date nears.
Of these, first up is a Joyful Candlelight Concert by the Sul Ross State University Music Program at 7:30 Wednesday at Marshall Auditorium.
Professor Andrew D. Alegria will conduct the Sul Ross Concert Choir, Sul Ross Concert Band and Sul Ross Guitar Ensemble.
Admission is free.

Los agentes del sheriff del condado de Presidio respondieron a una llamada de un accidente de caza el domingo y descubrieron a un hombre de 15 años muriendo por una herida de bala.
El joven recibió un disparo fatal en el pecho mientras preparaba rifles para ir a cazar varias millas al norte de Presidio en una conocida zona de caza al oeste de la autopista 67.
Los familiares transportaron inmediatamente a la víctima a Marfa en un vehículo personal escoltado por agentes, donde se reunieron con la ambulancia de Marfa que los llevó al hospital alpino.
A pesar de los esfuerzos por reanimarlo, la víctima fue declarada muerta a su llegada. La familia estaba en su viaje anual de caza al condado de Presidio.
