At the end of this week’s city council meeting, officials voted to offer the city manager position to a new candidate.
After discussing the matter in closed session, officials motioned to offer Henry Arredondo the role.
STEPHENS1: “So the motion passes at 3 to nothing, which is a majority, that the city will offer to Henry Arredondo the position of city manager at a starting salary of $140,000.”
The move to hire Arredondo comes after the last candidate who was offered the position – Edgar Garcia – withdrew his application for consideration.
The next city council meeting is in January.

On Friday, Alpine Memorial Funeral Home will hold their annual Service of Remembrance, an evening for reflection and community.
The service will take place at the Granada Theater in Alpine from 5 to 7 p.m. It will be followed by dinner and an evening of music.

On Saturday, Marfa Studio of Arts invites the public to an art show, featuring the work of artists teaching this year at Marfa Elementary.
The opening reception for the show is Saturday, Dec. 6, from 4 to 7 p.m. See works by local artists Chelsea Quinlan, Katrina Jane, Marcy Rodriguez, Suzanne McCleod, Katy Baldock and Gary Jean Dorey.
The work will be exhibited until January 2026.

The last guided hike up Hancock Hill of 2025 is this weekend.
The hikes are led by professionals who provide insights to the land and wildlife in the region – all while taking in stunning views of the Big Bend landscape.
The last hike of the season is Saturday, Dec. 6 – and will be led by Jesse Kelsch, an assistant professor of geology at Sul Ross. She’ll talk about the region and geologic time.
The hike begins at 9 a.m., and will take roughly two hours. It’s free and open to the public.
Reservations are required and can be made online at sulross.edu/guided-hikes.

This weekend, the Chinati Foundation and Sul Ross State University present “Seeing Light,” a live reading featuring the work of Sul Ross students.
The event takes place Sunday, Dec. 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Locker Plant in Marfa.
The reading is free and open to the public. The Locker Planet is located at 115 E. Oak Street.

The Presidio County Sheriff’s Office is holding a toy drive until Friday, Dec. 12.
The department is looking for donations of toys, games, puzzles, dolls and craft kits. All donations must be wrapped and in good condition.
Donations can be dropped off at the sheriff’s office, located at 320. N. Highland.

Later this month, the Sunshine House in Alpine will hold a free health clinic.
On Monday, Dec. 22, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the clinic will offer general checkups and consultations, EKG screenings, and ultrasound screenings.
The Sunshine house is located at 402 E. Holland Ave.
