Good evening, today is Friday, December 31st, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
We have been informed of the passing of former Chief of Alpine Police Henry Ogletree by the Alpine Police Department.
Ogletree served as Chief of the Alpine Police department after his retirement from the Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission.
After his time with APD, he served his community in many capacities including 20 years as a Brewster County Constable.
He attended Sul Ross State University and earned his degree in Criminal Justice. We currently do not have a full obituary.
Presidio County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to an airplane crash North of the Presidio International Airport at approximately 3:51 p.m.
Deputies arrived on scene and assisted the injured passengers where they discovered that the crash was a smuggling attempt gone wrong.
The pilot attempted to smuggle several undocumented individuals from Presidio by air.
Investigators believe the excess weight of the passengers 6 passengers in a 4 seat aircraft and low fuel contributed to the cause of the accident.
Presidio Police Officers, U.S. Border patrol, Presidio EMS, TXDOT and Presidio Fire Department arrived on scene to assist the search and rescue efforts.
Some of the undocumented individuals were transported to hospitals in El Paso and others were detained by U.S. Border Patrol.
The pilot absconded and is wanted for questioning. The Presidio County Sheriff’s Office will continue investigating and filing smuggling charges on the person or persons involved.

Brewster County deputies and U.S. Border Patrol agents continue to investigate a smuggling scheme discovered Thursday morning.
3 illegal immigrants were caught in the scheme in a Lajitas hotel room. The suspects were referred to Border Patrol Agents for processing and deportation.
The new year in our region is looking much greener thanks to the “Tree Equity in the Big Bend” project by the Big Bend Conservation Alliance.
Tree Equity in the Big Bend takes the concept of Tree Equity and applies it to the rural towns of Far West Texas.
Tree Equity in an area means having enough trees so that everyone can experience the health, climate and economic benefits.
The project uses the lens of environmental justice to distribute sycamores, cottonwoods, desert willows to areas of Big Bend’s towns where very little tree coverage exists today.
So far, trees have been planted in Fort Davis, Marfa and Presidio with the collaboration of many different local organizations.
In Fort Davis, B.B.C.A. partnered with Mobile Comunidad to provide trees to residents of Chihuahuita, a formerly segregated neighborhood on the south side of town.
In Marfa, B.B.C.A. partnered with the Marfa Food Pantry to provide trees to residents through a tree giveaway for food pantry clients.
They also partnered with with the Blackwell School Alliance and Marfa Parks and Recreation to plant trees in Blackwell Park.
In Presidio, Project Homeleaf and City of Presidio provided trees to town residents and planted them in locations throughout town.
Project Homeleaf is an organization created and run by students at Presidio Independent School District with a focus on “greening” Presidio.

Sul Ross’ Borderlands Research Institute has published their 2021 Conservation Biology Research Report with insights into the Chihuahuan Desert Environment.
The report talks about ongoing research on black bears, kit foxes, wintering grassland birds and landscape ecology.
Current students with ongoing projects at B.R.I. include Barbara Sugarman, Emily Card, Alejandro Chavez Trevino and Caitlin Camp.

Se nos ha informado del fallecimiento del exjefe de la policía de Alpine Henry Ogletree por el Departamento de Policía de Alpine.
Ogletree se desempeñó como Jefe del Departamento de Policía de Alpine después de su retiro de la Comisión de Bebidas Alcohólicas de Texas.
Después de su tiempo con A.P.D., sirvió a su comunidad en muchas capacidades, incluyendo 20 años como alguacil del condado de Brewster.
Asistió a la Universidad Estatal de Sul Ross y obtuvo su título en Justicia Penal. Actualmente no tenemos un obituario completo.
Los ayudantes del alguacil del condado de Presidio respondieron a un accidente de avión al norte del Aeropuerto Internacional de Presidio aproximadamente a las 3:51 p.m.
