Gary Lee Abercrombie of Odessa passed away peacefully on Dec. 24th at MCH Odessa after a lengthy illness. He was 60.
Gary was born in Alpine, Texas, to Bill and Bonnie Abercrombie. The family moved to Pecos, where he attended school and graduated from Pecos High School. Later, he moved to Alpine and attended Sul Ross State University and started his family.
He was a cowboy and a welder. Gary loved the beauty and freedom of being outdoors: fishing, hunting, boating, riding horses, roping, and he was a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan. His pride and joy were his daughters, grandson, and his fur babies Todd and Vixie.
Gary is survived by his two daughters, grandson, three siblings, and numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces.
His family expresses their gratitude for the staff at MCH Odessa, West Texas Cancer Center, Texas Tech Internal Medicine, and MD Anderson.
In lieu of flowers: donations to West Texas Gifts of Hope, local blood banks, food banks, or animal shelters in his memory are appreciated.
A viewing for Gary will be Dec. 31st from 9 to 11 a.m. at Alpine Memorial Funeral Home.
The burial will be from 11 a.m to 1 p.m.

On the first day of the year, rangers at Davis Mountains State Park will host a mile-high first day hike.
At just over 5,000 feet in elevation, the trails in the park showcase the beautiful vistas of the surrounding Davis Mountains.
The trail will take hikers along the Skyline Drive trail, and take roughly two to two-and-a-half hours. If interested, wear hiking shoes or boots and bring trekking poles if you have mobility issues.
Registration is required, and you can do that online–just search for the Davis Mountains State Park website.
Hikers will meet at the CCC Rock Lookout. Dress warmly.
The event is $6 per adult, or free for campers, those that have day passes already, or free with a Texas State Park Pass.

Holy Angels Cemetery Association is hosting a New Years celebration.
There will be a dinner, a dance and live entertainment fundraiser on Dec. 31 at the Granada Theatre in Alpine.
The dinner will start at 7 p.m. The music for the night will be provided by the Pecos River Band and DJ Pancho. There will also be door prizes, a photobooth, and party favors.
Tickets for the event are $50 per person.

Proceeds from the event will support the Holy Angels Cemetery Association, a local nonprofit maintaining one of Alpine’s most historic community spaces.

Next month, the Big Bend Live Stock Association will host its 82nd annual stock show.
The show begins Friday, Jan. 9 at the Alpine ISD ag barn – beginning with the goat show at 9 a.m. And then at 5:30 on Friday, the horse show kicks off at the Sul Ross SALE Arena.
The stock show will continue on Saturday, Jan. 10 with a steer show, an awards show and auction. There will be food each day for sale.

Gary Lee Abercrombie, de Odessa, falleció pacíficamente el 24 de diciembre en Odessa tras una larga enfermedad. Tenía 60 años.
Gary nació en Alpine, Texas, hijo de Bill y Bonnie Abercrombie. La familia se mudó a Pecos, donde asistió a la escuela y se graduó de la Escuela Preparatoria Pecos. Posteriormente, se mudó a Alpine, donde asistió a la Universidad Estatal Sul Ross y formó su familia.
Era vaquero y soldador. A Gary le encantaba la belleza y la libertad de la naturaleza: pescar, cazar, navegar, montar a caballo y lazar, y era un ferviente aficionado de los Dallas Cowboys. Su mayor orgullo y alegría eran sus hijas, su nieto y sus mascotas, Todd y Vixie.
A Gary le sobreviven sus dos hijas, su nieto, tres hermanos y numerosos primos, sobrinos y sobrinas.
Su familia expresa su agradecimiento al personal del MCH Odessa, West Texas Cancer Center, el Departamento de Medicina Interna de Texas Tech y MD Anderson.

El primer día del año, los guardabosques del Parque Estatal Davis Mountains organizarán una caminata de Año Nuevo a gran altitud.
Con una elevación de poco más de 1500 metros, los senderos del parque ofrecen vistas panorámicas de las hermosas montañas Davis que lo rodean.
La ruta seguirá el sendero Skyline Drive y tendrá una duración aproximada de dos a dos horas y media. Si está interesado, use calzado de senderismo o botas y lleve bastones de trekking si tiene problemas de movilidad.

La Asociación del Cementerio Holy Angels organiza una celebración de Año Nuevo.
Habrá una cena, baile y entretenimiento en vivo para recaudar fondos el 31 de diciembre en el Teatro Granada en Alpine.
La cena comenzará a las 7 p.m. La música estará a cargo de la banda Pecos River Band y DJ Pancho. También habrá sorteos, un fotomatón y obsequios para los asistentes.

El próximo mes, la Asociación Ganadera de Big Bend celebrará su 82.ª feria ganadera anual.
La feria comienza el viernes 9 de enero en el establo agrícola del Distrito Escolar Independiente de Alpine, con la exhibición de cabras a las 9:00 a. m. Posteriormente, a las 5:30 p. m. del mismo viernes, dará inicio la exhibición de caballos en la Arena SALE de Sul Ross .
La feria ganadera continuará el sábado 10 de enero con una exhibición de novillos, una ceremonia de premiación y una subasta. Habrá venta de comida todos los días.
