Good evening, today is Thursday, December 30th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The City of Alpine reminds citizens of holiday safety tips to keep pets safe through the winter season.
Make sure that your pet has a well-insulated waterproof doghouse. Shelters should be big enough for them to move around comfortably but retain body heat.
Always have identification on your pet whether it be a tag or microchip. After a walk wipe down paws and fur.
Antifreeze is poisonous to pets and can be fatal so clean up any spills that may have happened. Call your veterinarian immediately if your pet ingests any potentially harmful chemicals.
Bang on the hood of your vehicle before starting it. Smaller animals such as cats and wildlife may have used your car for a safe warm place for the night.
Avoid shaving animals down as their fur will protect them from the weather. If needed, trim longer haired animals to avoid ice balls accumulating on them when they are outside.
Keep them well hydrated, make sure that water bowls do not freeze and that the water is changed often.
And if you see an animal that needs help or maybe you just want Animal Services to do a welfare check call to report it at 837-3486.

Brewster County Sheriff’s department arrested a group of 8 illegal immigrants Wednesday followed by a pregnant woman who was abandoned by the group Thursday morning.
The group 8 illegal entrants had abandoned the woman during their failed attempt to flee US Border Patrol Agents and Brewster County Deputies.
The pregnant woman was referred to Border Patrol Agents for processing and deportation, following a medical screening.
The Lone Star Cowboy Poetry Gathering has just published their latest film, “The Legacy Lives On” produced by John and Erika Moore
The 77-minute film features Gail Steiger, Amy Hale, Mikki Daniel, Dave Stamey, and Ray Fitzgerald sharing cowboy poetry and music.
John and Erika Moore filmed on location in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas. If you enjoyed “Keeping the Tradition Alive”, you’ll enjoy “The Legacy Lives On,” they said.
The next in-person Lone Star Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Alpine will be February 18 and 19 after the 2021 show was canceled because of the Covid Pandemic.

The Twin Peaks 4-H club is hosting a fundraising raffle to send club members to the summer camp at the 4-H center in Brownwood, Texas.
They will be raffling a C.Z. Redhead Premier 20-guage Shotgun with a suggested retail price of 1,019 dollars at 20 dollars a ticket with all proceeds going to the Twin Peaks 4-H Club.
The drawing for the shotgun will be held at Dodson Guns on Saturday, February 12th at noon. The winner must meet all federal and state requirements but does not need to be present to win.
To buy a ticket, talk to your local 4-H club member or call Luke Hendryx at 837-6207.
Lori Reynolds has won this year’s H.L. Kokernot Junior Memorial Award for her photo “Beneath the Light” in the Alpine Texas Photo Contest.
The yearly contest has five prizes, with the top Kokernot Junior Memorial Award giving 500 dollars.
The other prizes include 100 dollars for the second place Henry Charles Trost Memorial Award, and 50 dollars for the Twin Sisters, Hancock Hill and “A” Mountain awards.
Free and open to the public, this annual contest is an opportunity for visitors from near or far as well as local community members to showcase their photographs and videos.
Participants are asked to capture the city of Alpine and/or its surroundings in a personal, reflective way to reveal the personality of the town through their eyes.
