The City of Alpine Police Department has issued a reminder that possessing and discharging of fireworks within city limits is illegal.
The city ordinance states no person shall cast, throw or fire any “squip, rocket, cracker, torpedo, grenade, cap or cartridge or other combustible fireworks of any kind” in the city.
Brewster County also is under a burn ban prohibiting the sale, detonation, ignition or in any way use of fireworks classified as “skyrockets with sticks” and “missiles with fins.”
However, Brewster County does not prohibit common small fireworks classified as a Class C explosives.
The County also does not ban large fireworks devices designed primarily to produce visible or audible effects classified as a Class B Explosives.
Citizens can be fined up to 500 dollars for each violation of the city ordinance. To report a violation, call the Police Department non-emergency number at 837-3486.
The Alpine Public Library said this month that charitable giving in the U.S. is highly seasonal.
Most of the fundraising dollars that help support Alpine Public Library come at the end of the year and now is a good time to give.
About 35 percent of its annual budget comes from Brewster County and the City of Alpine combined.
That means they need to raise 65 percent from Re-Reads book sales, grants, fundraising and donations from supporters.
A study by the University of Texas found the library adds one million dollars of value to the community.
First, it adds about 500 thousand dollars as a business entity. Second, it provides another 500 thousand through the services the library provides.
In Texas, every dollar invested in public libraries gives communities four dollars and 64 cents worth of access to resources, programming, services and technology.

A non-profit organization seeking to help people navigate the federal Affordable Care Act, better known as ObamaCare, will have a public meeting in Odessa next month.
The group called CHIMES is part of Project Amistad in El Paso that is helping the community navigate through the A.C.A. Marketplace portal.
It hopes to reach out to the community as much as possible before the end of open enrollment which is January 15.
To that end, they will travel to Odessa Friday, January 7, and will be at I.C.A. Business Plaza from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. to help enroll the community.
Agents assigned to the Highway 118 checkpoint near Alpine encountered more than 70 undocumented migrants in five different vehicles arriving together Thursday.
While conducting immigration inspections, agents noticed several individuals attempting to hide inside the vehicles.
All subjects were taken to the Alpine Border Patrol Station for processing.
The case was turned over to Homeland Security Investigations in El Paso for criminal prosecution.
The Big Bend Arts Council’s monthly critique group meets on the second Wednesday of the Month at 11 a.m. January 12 at the Alpine Visitor Center at 106 North 3rd in Alpine.

And a new show now is on display at Gallery on the Square at 115 West Holland Avenue through Tuesday, January 11.
