Big Bend National Park entrance kiosks have transitioned to a cashless system and will only accept debit or credit cards for payment.
The holiday season is a busy time at the park, so visitors should come prepared and expect possible delays at park entrances. Additionally, parking is limited at popular hiking trails, such as the Lost Mine Trail, and may fill up. If you’re headed to the park, make a back-up plan in addition to your primary plan. Bring plenty of water and snacks and please be patient. Don’t forget, the speed limit on most of the main roads in the park is 45 miles per hour. Slow down and watch out for wildlife and other park visitors.
If you’re planning a scenic drive this holiday season, be sure to observe the speed limits and watch for motorcyclists and bicyclists on the road.
The Alpine Public Library and Rereads Used Bookstore will be closed from December 30th to January 1st.
Today through December 29th, the Alpine Public Library will be open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. with Rereads open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Normal operating hours will resume Tuesday, January 2nd.
Celebrate the new year with a Polar Bear plunge in the world’s largest spring-fed swimming pool on January 1st at 9 a.m.
Meet at the pool gate of Balmorhea State Park. Bring your swimsuit or wetsuit, towels, goggles and water shoes. Free with park admission, which is 7 dollars per person for ages 13 and up. Children 12 and under are free.
February 3rd marks the return of the Big Bend Natural History Associations Pioneer Reunion.
This year, local speakers will discuss different periods of human habitation throughout Big Bend’s history. Tom Alex will discuss the area’s paleo- history, David Keller will share stories from early ranching times, and Dan Sholly will cover early park service days. Big Bend National Park Deputy Superintendent Rick Gupman will provide a park update and will discuss the future of Big Bend National Park. The event will begin with a light lunch from 11:00-12:00 and the meeting will conclude at 4:00 p.m. Tickets are $25 for the general public and $20 for Big Bend Natural History Association members. Tickets will be available for sale beginning January 2nd at 432-477-2236.
Join Davis Mountains State Park for a one-hour Homeless Dog Walk that happens every Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m.
Grand Companions Pet Adoption Service brings the dogs. This is a chance for these dogs to get extra exercise and socialization while they wait to be adopted to their forever homes. Meet at the Interpretive Center at Davis Mountains State Park a little before 10 a.m.
Sul Ross State University invites the public to attend a monthly guided hike on Hancock Hill, beginning in January 2024.
Each hike will have a theme and hike leader from Sul Ross. Hike themes will vary each month with topics ranging from birds and plants to geology and anthropology. Participants will learn about the history of Alpine and Sul Ross and the natural history of Hancock Hill while taking in stunning views.
The 1.8-mile hike is moderately strenuous and will begin at 9 a.m., lasting approximately two hours. The hikes are free and open to the public, though only 12 hikers will be allowed for each event, and a reservation is required.
