A reminder that during the holiday week, the city of Alpine will have special hours for the Hal Flanders Recycling Center.
The center will be open only on the following dates during the Christmas and New Year holidays: Today (TUESDAY) until 5 p.m. and on Tuesday, Dec. 30, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Regular operating hours will resume on Wednesday, Jan. 7, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

City offices will also be closed in observance of the Christmas holiday.
They’ll be closed from Wednesday Dec. 24 to Friday Dec. 26. City of Alpine offices will reopen on Monday, Dec. 29.
The offices will close again during the New Year’s holiday – from Wednesday, Dec. 31 to Friday, Jan. 2.

On Christmas Day, the Black Bear restaurant at the Indian Lodge in Fort Davis is holding a Christmas buffet.
The holiday lunch will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., or until they run out of food.
On the menu is smoked turkey, cornbread stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole and rolls.
The buffet is $21 for adults and $14 for kids.

On the first day of the year, rangers at Davis Mountains State Park will host a mile-high first day hike.
At just over 5,000 feet in elevation, the trails in the park showcase the beautiful vistas of the surrounding Davis Mountains.
The trail will take hikers along the Skyline Drive trail, and take roughly two to two-and-a-half hours. If interested, wear hiking shoes or boots and bring trekking poles if you have mobility issues.
Registration is required, and you can do that online–just search for the Davis Mountains State Park website.
Hikers will meet at the CCC Rock Lookout. Dress warmly.
The event is $6 per adult, or free for campers, those that have day passes already, or free with a Texas State Park Pass.

The 35th Annual Black Pea cookoff takes place in Terlingua on New Year’s day. To join the competition, all you have to do is make some “Good Luck Peas” and take them to Terlingua ghost town. There will be live music, a raffle and prizes for the best dish.
All proceeds from the event benefit local high school graduates.

Holy Angels Cemetery Association is hosting a New Years celebration.
There will be a dinner, a dance and live entertainment fundraiser on Dec. 31 at the Granada Theatre in Alpine.
The dinner will start at 7 p.m. The music for the night will be provided by the Pecos River Band and DJ Pancho. There will also be door prizes, a photobooth, and party favors.
Tickets for the event are $50 per person.

Proceeds from the event will support the Holy Angels Cemetery Association, a local nonprofit maintaining one of Alpine’s most historic community spaces.

In January, the Big Bend Live Stock Association will host its 82nd annual stock show.
The show begins Friday, Jan. 9 at the Alpine ISD ag barn – beginning with the goat show at 9 a.m. And then at 5:30 on Friday, the horse show kicks off at the Sul Ross SALE Arena.
The stock show will continue on Saturday, Jan. 10 with a steer show, an awards show and auction. There will be food each day for sale.

Un recordatorio de que durante la semana de vacaciones, la ciudad de Alpine tendrá un horario especial para el Centro de Reciclaje Hal Flanders.

El día de Navidad, el restaurante Black Bear en el Indian Lodge en Fort Davis ofrecerá un buffet navideño.

El primer día del año, los guardabosques del Parque Estatal Davis Mountains organizarán una caminata de primer día de una milla de altura.
A una altitud de poco más de 1500 metros, los senderos del parque ofrecen vistas panorámicas impresionantes de las montañas Davis circundantes.
La ruta discurre por el sendero Skyline Drive y tiene una duración aproximada de dos a dos horas y media. Si le interesa participar, use calzado adecuado para senderismo y lleve bastones de trekking si tiene problemas de movilidad.
Es necesario registrarse; puede hacerlo en línea buscando el sitio web del Parque Estatal Davis Mountains.
Los participantes se reunirán en el mirador CCC Rock. Vístase con ropa abrigada.

El 35º Concurso Anual de Guiso de Frijoles Negros se celebra en Terlingua el Día de Año Nuevo. Para participar, solo tienes que preparar un guiso de frijoles negros para la buena suerte y llevarlo al pueblo fantasma de Terlingua. Habrá música en vivo, una rifa y premios para el mejor plato.
Todas las ganancias del evento se destinarán a los graduados de la escuela secundaria local.

La Asociación del Cementerio Holy Angels organiza una celebración de Año Nuevo.
Habrá una cena, baile y entretenimiento en vivo para recaudar fondos el 31 de diciembre en el Teatro Granada en Alpine.
La cena comenzará a las 7 p.m. La música estará a cargo de la banda Pecos River Band y DJ Pancho. También habrá sorteos, un fotomatón y obsequios para los asistentes.

En enero, la Asociación Ganadera de Big Bend celebrará su 82ª feria ganadera anual.
La feria comienza el viernes 9 de enero en el establo agrícola del Distrito Escolar Independiente de Alpine, con la exhibición de cabras a las 9:00 a. m. Ese mismo viernes, a las 5:30 p. m., dará inicio la exhibición de caballos en la Arena SALE de Sul Ross.
La feria continuará el sábado 10 de enero con una exhibición de novillos, una ceremonia de premiación y una subasta. Habrá venta de comida todos los días.
