Good evening, today is Thursday, December 23rd, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The Calendar for the 78th Annual Big Bend Livestock Association Stock Show January 6 to 8 has been released.
Weigh-in for hogs, lambs and goats will be at the Ag Barn from 4 to 6 p.m. and steers will be from 4 to 4:30 at Hill Top Pens.
The Lamb show begins at the Ag Barn at 9 a.m. Friday and the Goat Show will follow and then the Steer Show.
Horse Show exhibitors need to report to the Sul Ross SALE Arena at 4 p.m. Friday. The Swine Show begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Ag Barn.
The awards and sale once again will be at the Pete P. Gallego Center on the Sul Ross University campus starting with the buyer’s registration and the social begins at 6 p.m. Saturday.
The Awards program starts at 6:30 and includes presentation of Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Buckles, honoree and senior recognitions.
The auction begins at 7 with Rusty Mertink returning as auctioneer.
The concession stand will open at 7 a.m. Friday and Saturday mornings at the Ag Barn.
The opening reception for the next exhibit at the Museum of the Big Bend, “Texas as Art,” will be from 5 to 7 p.m. January 14.
A museum release said images in “Texas as Art” are designed to engage the viewer with the diversity of Texas landscapes as seen from earth’s orbit.
It will include the expression of natural ecosystem elements, geologic features and the expanding human footprint on the natural landscape.
The exhibit is organized by Rebecca Dodge and continues through April 2. It will be free for members and five dollars for non-members.
The deadline is next week to apply for a state program that allows purchase of college credits for young children to save on the expense when they reach college age.
Comptroller Glenn Hegar said the deadline is December 30, Friday of next week, for the Texas Match the Promise Foundation scholarship awards.
These scholarship awards are available for fifth through ninth graders who are beneficiaries of a Texas Tuition Promise Fund account.
The family’s income cannot exceed 100 thousand dollars and recipients must be Texas residents and dependents for tax purposes.
Applicants can use the new online application system or download an application form and mail it in.
Families who do not have an account in the fund can find information about establishing one at matchthepromise.org or call 800/531-5441, extension 3-7570.

The Texas Department of Transportation is reminding Texans to stay safe during the holidays in an effort to end the consecutive streak of deaths on Texas roadways.
There were 2,462 D.U.I.-alcohol-related traffic crashes in Texas during the holiday season last year.
Those crashes killed 93 people and seriously injured another 215.
To avoid these accidents Tex-Dot is reminding Texans of the many sober ride options available. Have a designated driver, call a taxi, use a rideshare service or call a friend or family member.
This is an initiative of the “The Drive Sober. No Regrets,” a key component of End the Streak Texas.
That program encourages drivers to make safer choices while behind the wheel such as wearing a seat belt, never texting and driving and never driving under the influence.
November 7, 2000, was the last deathless day on Texas roadways. End the Streak Texas asks all Texans to commit to driving safely to help end the streak of daily deaths.
