Good evening, today is Tuesday, December 20th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The Alpine Independent School District has again received a 100%, or “Superior,” rating on the annual Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas, or FIRST Report.
It will have a public hearing on the report at Wednesday’s School Board Meeting, but with perfect scores in all 15 indicators, no public input is expected.
Of course, citizens can speak if they choose to. The district has gotten superior reports for several years.
“Indicators” included cash on hand to meet expenses, reserve funds to cover at least 60 days, audit reports free of material weaknesses, compliance with debt indicators and others.
The board meets at 5:30 Wednesday in the meeting room in the School Administration Building at 704 West Sul Ross Avenue.
Michael Mountain Ministries of Alpine invites one and all to the 32nd Annual Live Nativity Scene tonight and on the final night Wednesday.
Complete with live animals, lights and Christmas music, the production begins each evening at 7 at the Kokernot Lodge Stable Area.
Director Karen McGuire said it’s a tradition that has grown in the more than three decades since its beginning.
McGuire: “It’s been a long run and we’re so proud of it but we’re also so proud of all our volunteers and the community effort that it all goes into. It’s a big old job but it’s worth every minute of it.”
McGuire said that the community has grown alongside the event with volunteers helping set up the show, taking part in the nativity scene and helping serve hot beverages and cookies.
McGuire: “Most years we have people whose children are in it and their parents were in it when they were young. Occasionally we have a grandparent that has been in it, you know? So not all of them are as old as me but there’s some coming up.”
Guests are invited to bring a lawn chair and blanket so they can view the pageant that honors the birth of Jesus Christ at no cost, but donations will be accepted.
To participate, be at the lodge between 6 and 6:45 each evening to robe up.
McGuire invited those interested in helping unload or set up for the Nativity, or just for more information, to call 386-3071.
Comptroller Glenn Hegar has reminded Texans that the deadline to apply for Texas Match the Promise Foundation scholarship awards is December 31.
The scholarships are available for third through ninth graders who are beneficiaries of a Texas Tuition Promise Fund account and other state programs.
They include those in the prepaid college tuition plan, families of 100,000-dollar annual incomes or less and Texas residents and the dependents.
Applicants can use the online application system at matchthepromise.org or download an application form to mail in.
Families who do not have a T.T.P.F. account can find information about establishing one at tuitionpromise.org.

With Christmas approaching this weekend, area law enforcement agencies are all thanking their citizens for their contributions.
It started years ago when some law enforcement agencies answered emergency calls in poor areas and noticed children often with nothing under the tree, if they even had a tree.
People donate gifts for distribution to needy families and money, which is used to buy gifts.
It is a clear example of the miracle of giving to those less fortunate at this magic time of year.
