Good evening, today is Friday, December 16th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Our Congressman Tony Gonzales and Henry Cuellar have introduced the Taking Action to Prevent Suicide Act.
The TAPS Act creates a comprehensive, anti-suicide task force to assess the underlying factors leading to high suicide rates at U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
The National Border Patrol Council has endorsed this legislation.
Gonzales said 14 agents and officers have taken their own life this year, which he said was 14 too many.
Working long hours and responding to high-stress situations, the men and women in green and blue are being pushed to their breaking point every single day, he said.
Gonzales said the ongoing border crisis has highlighted the increased challenges Border Patrol employees face every single day.
A Republican, Gonzales has told us he works well with Democrat Cuellar, whom he called a good friend.
The two represent the bipartisan work many say is so badly needed these days.
Representatives from the University of Texas Permian Basin will host an informational meeting at the Alpine Independent School District Administration Building at 4:30 Monday.
The meeting is for people interested in becoming certified Alpine teachers through their teacher residency program or the U.T.P.B. post-baccalaureate teacher certification program.
The Post-Baccalaureate teacher program is for people who have completed their bachelor’s degree and are looking for a standalone certification program.
The teacher residency program is for people who want to complete their bachelor’s degree, earn their teacher certification and be on a pathway to becoming an Alpine teacher.
Applicants should have an associate degree by August 2023 and would complete years three and four of their undergraduate coursework online through U.T.P.B.
During the 2024-25 school year, applicants would complete their fourth year of undergraduate coursework online and would work as a Teacher Resident in Alpine I.S.D.
At the end of the 2024-25 school year, participants would graduate with their bachelor’s degree, teacher certification and a year of teacher training support.
For families that make less than 100-thousand dollars a year, eligible participants might qualify for free tuition and fees through the Falcon Free program.

The Brewster County Sheriff’s Office, Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Border Patrol and Texas D.P.S. seized nearly a ton of marijuana early Friday.
The investigation resulted in the recovery of 18 hundred and 86 pounds of the weed.
This year’s Annual Live Nativity Scene will be at 7 each evening from Monday through Wednesday at the stable area next to Kokernot Lodge.
It all started in in the 1980s as just a still scene in front of the First Presbyterian Church with the same manger and a few props but no animals.
It included Mary, Joseph, a few shepherds and an angel on a ladder behind a backdrop.
Sponsor Michael’s Mountain Ministry moved the program to the stable area between Kokernot Lodge and the Outdoor theatre in 1991 where it has remained.
Coffee, hot chocolate and cookies will be served to members of the audience and participants after each night’s performance.
Director Karen McGuire invited in those interested in helping unload or set up for the Nativity to call 386-3071.
To participate in the performance, be at Kokernot Lodge between 6 and 6:30 each night of the performances.
McGuire reminded audience members to dress warmly and bring lawn chairs or blankets to be more comfortable while viewing the performances.

Los solicitantes deben tener un título de asociado para agosto de 2023 y completar los años tres y cuatro de sus cursos de pregrado en línea a través de U.T.P.B.
Durante el año escolar 2024-25, los solicitantes completarían su cuarto año de cursos de pregrado en línea y trabajarían como maestros residentes en Alpine ISD.
Al final del año escolar 2024-25, los participantes se graduarían con su título de licenciatura, certificación docente y un año de apoyo a la formación docente.
