Brewster County officials today (TUESDAY) discussed and approved of a partial fireworks ban for the New Years holiday.
Speaking before the commissioners, emergency management coordinator James Etchison said his department was wanting to prohibit the use of two specific types of fireworks:
ETCHISON1: Sky Rockets with sticks and missiles with fins – make sure nothing shoots into the air and goes anywhere that’s bad. And conditions are bad. We had a fire yesterday.” (0:11)
County officials were in agreement on the fireworks ban, but County Judge Greg Henington said he would have to amend the policy to be in effect through Jan. 2, so the New Year holidays are fully covered.
Meanwhile, in the city, fireworks of any kind are prohibited.

Tomorrow (WEDNESDAY), children throughout the Big Bend have a chance to contact Santa Claus at the North Pole by shortwave radio.
On Wednesday, Dec. 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. head to the True Value Hardware store in Alpine. There, members of the Big Bend Amateur Radio Club will help children talk to Saint Nick via shortwave radio.
Dress warmly and head to True Value between 5 and 7 p.m. to have your chance to contact the North Pole in person.

Tomorrow evening (WEDNESDAY), the Alpine ISD board of trustees are set to consider a proposal to rename the high school gym after longtime educator and coach, Rosa Garcia.
After months of public input, a committee charged with renaming the gym made their suggestion, highlighting Garcia’s career in education and her impact on athletics.
The school board meets at the Alpine ISD administration building on Dec. 17, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

This weekend, Michael’s Mountain Ministry of Alpine will hold their annual live nativity scene.
Karen McGuire spoke with KVLF about the annual event.
MCGUIRE1: “We welcome everyone to come watch it and to be in it. We have all the costumes, there’s no lines to learn, you just follow somebody who has been in it before. And the queues are the lights and the scriptures. It is, it kind of just takes a life of its own – it’s really, really a beautiful thing.” (0:16)
McGuire says the event started out as a “frozen scene” outside the Presbyterian Church in 1988.
MCGUIRE2: “We’re pushing 38 years, and that’s exciting. And it requires an army of volunteers.” (0:07)
If you’re able to help set up the nativity, head to the stable area by Kokernot Lodge Wednesday afternoon around 4.
The live nativity performances take place this weekend – Dec. 19, 20 and the 21, beginning each evening at 7 p.m.
There will be coffee, hot chocolate and cookies served to members of the audience and participants after each night’s performance.
And on Saturday, Dec. 20, the Big Bend Children’s Chorus will entertain with Christmas carols before the nativity performance.

Next week, the Sunshine House in Alpine will hold a free health clinic.
On Monday, Dec. 22, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the clinic will offer general checkups and consultations, EKG screenings, and ultrasound screenings.
The Sunshinehouse is located at 402 E. Holland Ave.

In January, the Big Bend Live Stock Association will host its 82nd annual stock show.
The show begins Friday, Jan. 9 at the Alpine ISD ag barn – beginning with the goat show at 9 a.m. And then at 5:30 on Friday, the horse show kicks off at the Sul Ross SALE Arena.
The stock show will continue on Saturday, Jan. 10 with a steer show, an awards show and auction. There will be food each day for sale.

Funcionarios del condado de Brewster discutieron y aprobaron hoy (martes) una prohibición parcial del uso de fuegos artificiales para las fiestas de Año Nuevo.
En su intervención ante los comisionados, el coordinador de gestión de emergencias, James Etchison, explicó que su departamento deseaba prohibir el uso de dos tipos específicos de fuegos artificiales:
cito: Cohetes con varillas y misiles con aletas: para garantizar que nada se dispare al aire y caiga en lugares peligrosos. Las condiciones son desfavorables. Tuvimos un incendio ayer.
Los funcionarios del condado estuvieron de acuerdo con la prohibición de los fuegos artificiales, pero el juez del condado, Greg Henington, indicó que tendría que modificar la normativa para que estuviera vigente hasta el 2 de enero, cubriendo así completamente las fiestas de Año Nuevo.
Mientras tanto, en la ciudad, está prohibido el uso de cualquier tipo de fuegos artificiales.

Mañana por la noche (miércoles), la junta directiva del distrito escolar independiente de Alpine ISD considerará una propuesta para renombrar el gimnasio de la escuela preparatoria en honor a Rosa Garcia, educadora y entrenadora de larga trayectoria.
Tras meses de consultas públicas, un comité encargado de la propuesta de cambio de nombre presentó su sugerencia, destacando la trayectoria de Garcia en la educación y su impacto en el ámbito deportivo.
La junta escolar se reunirá en el edificio administrativo del distrito escolar de Alpine el 17 de diciembre, a partir de las 5:30 p.m.

En enero, la Asociación Ganadera de Big Bend celebrará su 82.ª feria ganadera anual.
La feria comienza el viernes 9 de enero en el establo agrícola del Distrito Escolar Independiente de Alpine, con la exhibición de cabras a las 9:00. A las 5:30 del viernes, comienza la exhibición de caballos en la Arena Sul Ross SALE.
La feria ganadera continuará el sábado 10 de enero con una exhibición de novillos, una ceremonia de premiación y una subasta. Habrá venta de comida todos los días.
