Alpine Animal Services is offering half-priced adoptions at the shelter to reduce the population of pets who may otherwise have to be euthanized.
Shelter Manager Jennifer Stewart notes nearly a quarter of a million more dogs and cats are in the country’s shelters than there were last year at this time.
She said this is critical for shelters who were already overwhelmed and over capacity two years ago.
An increasing trend nationwide is home breeding and puppy mills, which have added leftover puppies they can’t sell to the list of pets that are no longer needed or wanted.
With Christmas approaching, this might be an ideal time to find a gift for that special boy or girl who would love their own pet.

A heavy dose of pre-Christmas programs earlier this month has slowed a bit but it’s not all over.
The popular Live Nativity Scene by Michael’s Mountain Ministry of Alpine will be at 7 Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at Kokernot Lodge.
The Alpine Avalanche reports this week that many local performers in the event are returning this year and a couple of animals also are back this year.
Human performers included Scott and Heidi Wasserman of Wasserman Wranch and Burt Compton of Marfa.
And Carl the camel and Pumpkin the donkey will make encore performances.
Karen McGwire, production head for the program, said the Live Nativity has always been their gift to the tri-county area.
Performers who want to be in the production should show up between 6 and 6:30 each evening and volunteers to set up and tear down for each performance are always welcome.

The Big Bend Community Action Committee is having a public auction of surplus vehicles in Alpine, Marfa and Presidio.
Three vehicles are in Alpine, a 2002 and a 2004 van and a 2009 bus. Marfa has six vehicles, all vans or buses, 2001 to 2013 models, and Presidio has 17 with models from 1996 to 2019.
The auction will close beginning at 10 a.m. January 9. They can be viewed at renebates.com.
A ten-percent buyer’s premium will be added to the final selling price.

Brewster County Emergency Management Coordinator Stephanie Elmore has been elected secretary of the Big Bend Area Law Enforcement Officers Association.
Sheriff Ronny Dodson announced on Facebook this week that the election came at the association’s meeting Thursday.
And Detention Officer and Dispatcher Rebekah Hicks received a scholarship to attend the H. Joaquin Jackson Law Enforcement Academy at Sul Ross State University.
The meeting was hosted by Reeves County Sheriff Arturo “Art” Granado.
The City of Alpine has posted its monthly notice that utilities will not be disconnected in December.
However, disconnect fees of 35 dollars each still will be applied to accounts that have not been paid by 4 p.m. Thursday.
Customers may make payments at the payment drop box located outside City Hall, in person inside or online by registering at cityofalpine.com
