Good evening, today is Tuesday, December 13th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The Texas State University System Board of Regents has voted to accept the donation of 100 acres of land in Eagle Pass to Sul Ross State University.
The land will serve as the site of an envisioned comprehensive, four-year university and is donated by Eagle Pass Ranch Partnership.
The donation allows Sul Ross and T.S.U.S. to move forward with plans to build a new 30-million-dollar multi-purpose education building
The funding itself was provided by the State of Texas during the 2021 legislative session.
Construction is expected to be completed before the Fall 2025 semester.
Local law enforcement is participating in the national trend of Brown and Blue Santa, partnering with the community to help underprivileged children.
Citizens can bring cash donations or toys to either the police or Sheriff stations and other locations around the town.
The programs have been going on for more than 20 years and Alpine Police Chief Darryl Losoya said every year it’s grown from its humble beginnings.
Losoya: “In 95, the officers just responded to calls and they were noticing that some of the calls they were responding to there were children in the home. They didn’t have Christmas trees sometimes, there weren’t any gifts there for the children, and so the officers took it upon themselves to help these families out of their own pocket and started assisting them.”
Store locations like True Value, Porters, the Dollar stores, Tractor Supply, West Texas Community Credit Union, Alpine Small Animal Practice and more have boxes out to donate.
Toys must be unwrapped so parents can choose the appropriate toys. Sheriff Ronnie Dodson said they’ve been receiving more toys for younger children compared to teens.
Dodson: “Like I say, our biggest problem right now are the older kids starting about 12, 13, 14 years old. That’s where we fall short of toys because they’re in that age group where they’re not really a toy person, they’re more of a Nintendo guy.”
The last day to donate for the Blue Santa is the 22nd and the 23rd for the Brown Santa programs.
Dodson: “It’s very good and the people that come out and the closer it gets to Christmas the more they’re feeling and they feel that spirit and donations go up.”
All cash donations are used to buy gifts. Donations after Christmas to the Sheriff’s department will be used to help people pay for their utilities.
Our Congressman Tony Gonzales has joined others in Congress to urge President Biden to extend the C.D.C.’s Title 42 order beyond the December 21 deadline.
That rule requires immediate deportation of most single adults and, to the extent possible, families encountered at the Southwest Border to stem Covid.
Joining him in the bipartisan letter were Congressman Henry Cuellar and Senators Joe Manchin and John Cornyn.
They said that never before have we experienced this scope and scale of illegal border crossings.
And they are concerned the administration has not provided enough support or resources to the Department of Homeland Security which should be maintaining border security.
D.H.S. Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said he was anticipating as many as 18,000 unlawful crossings per day once Title 42 is lifted.
Most Mexicans, Guatemalans, Hondurans and Salvadorans encountered by U.S. Border Patrol in October were expelled under Title 42 rather than processed under Title 8.
The Congress members said they are committed to enacting bipartisan legislation to let D.H.S. maintain operational control over the southern border.
