The Big Bend Ranch Rodeo in Alpine is now underway at the S.A.L.E. arena at Sul Ross State University. And this year, the event is celebrating its 25th year of bringing together working cowboys to showcase the kind of work they do on ranches. That includes branding and doctoring and even bronc riding.
Tomorrow (SATURDAY), the final performance starts at 7:00 p.m. and will be followed by an awards ceremony.

Over the next several days, the Alpine-Fort Davis Plein Air paintout takes place across the region.
The first event takes place this weekend at Mitre Peak, about halfway between Alpine and Fort Davis. Artists will spend Saturday painting there – with wonderful mountain landscapes in view.
On Sunday, artists will paint all day at Cathedral Mountain Ranch, off Highway 118.

On Monday, the Brewster County Election Commission will meet to interview, review and discuss the candidates that have applied to be the county’s election administrator.
The meeting happens Monday, August 11 at 10 a.m. at the county courthouse.
While the county looks to hire someone full-time, officials have temporarily appointed current county clerk, Sarah Vasquez, to cover the position. County Judge Greg Henington called the move a QUOTE “bandaid” while the county finds someone to fill the position permanently.
Monday’s meeting comes nearly a month after the county’s previous elections administrator, Melissa Bergstrom, was arrested for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from the booster club for the Alpine High School band.

Next week, head to the Davis Mountains State Park to take in the perseid meteor shower.
The major summer meteor shower, which will see shooting stars dash across the nighttime sky, will peak on Tuesday, August 12. And you can catch them that day, from 10 to 11 p.m., at the far end of the Skyline Drive at the state park.
During the event, park rangers will also point out constellations in view and share other celestial knowledge.
The event is free for campers or Indian Lodge guests. Day passes are $6 per adult, or free for the carload with an active state park pass.

Later this month, K-V-L-F’s Tejano Sundays celebrates its 10 year anniversary.
The radio show will mark the occasion with a full day of fun, including a cornhole tournament, carshow, and music – featuring La Tropa F, Joanna Rae and the Puro Party All-Starz, and several DJs.
The 10-year anniversary celebration takes place August 16 at Skelton’s Runway.

Next month, head to Fort Stockton for Barrio Fest – a celebration of the Hispanic culture in the region.
The three-day event begins September 11 and includes a baseball game, a car show, and a 5K run.

El Rodeo Rancho Big Bend en Alpine ya está en marcha en el estadio S.A.L.E. de la Universidad Estatal Sul Ross. El lunes, la Comisión Electoral del Condado de Brewster se reunirá para entrevistar, revisar y discutir a los candidatos que han solicitado ser el administrador electoral del condado.

La mayor lluvia de meteoros del verano, en la que estrellas fugaces atravesarán el cielo nocturno, alcanzará su máximo esplendor el martes 12 de agosto. Podrá verlas ese mismo día, entre las 10 y las 11 de la noche, en el extremo más alejado de Skyline Drive en el parque estatal.
Durante el evento, los guardaparques también señalarán las constelaciones a la vista y compartirán otros conocimientos celestiales.
El evento es gratuito para campistas o huéspedes de Indian Lodge. Los pases diarios cuestan $6 por adulto o son gratuitos para todos los vehículos con un pase vigente para el parque estatal.
