Earlier today (TUESDAY), during a special meeting, Brewster County officials unanimously voted to appoint the county clerk to a part-time position as the county’s election administrator.
As Carlos Morales reports, the news comes as the previous elections administrator was placed on administrative leave and submitted her resignation to the commissioners.
During the special meeting, Brewster County commissioners approved creating a temporary part-time elections administrator position – and appointed current county clerk, Sarah Vasquez, in that role. She’ll be compensated $65 a day for that work.
County Judge Greg Henington said the move is a QUOTE “bandaid” while the county hires a person for a full-time position.
HENINGTON1: “I think we’re doing alright. The good news is we don’t have a big presidential election this year, so it’s mostly deadlines for getting the election judge just set up.” (0:09)
According to Henington, there are six candidates for the elections administrator position at this point – he expects the hiring process to take about 30 days.
Tuesday’s meeting comes nearly a month after the county’s previous elections administrator, Melissa Bergstrom, was arrested for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from the booster club for the Alpine High School band.
The local nonprofit Alpine Community Projects has several events this month – and you can participate.
On August 7, starting at 5:30, the group will host a potluck dinner at their office, located at 205 E. Sul ross Ave. Then in September, the group will host a state of education panel at the Espino Center at Sul Ross State University.

Later this week in Marfa, Big Bend Health is hosting a back to school bash.
On August 8, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00, head to Marfa Elementary for free sports physicals, free school vaccinations for qualifying students and free backpacks – while supplies last.

Later this month, K-V-L-F’s Tejano Sundays celebrates its 10 year anniversary.
The radio show will mark the occasion with a full day of fun, including a cornhole tournament, carshow, and music – featuring La Tropa F, Joanna Rae and the Puro Party All-Starz, and several DJs.
Speaking to K-V-L-F, the show’s host Robert Alvarez, said over the last 10 years the show has helped to keep Tejano not just alive but relevant too.
ALVAREZ1: “We just want to keep it relevant, because there’s still new artists coming out, there’s new music being made, and then there’s still all the legends still doing it to it.” (0:08)
Alvarez says the genre — which he calls an art form — is a staple in the Hispanic community. And it says it’s a significant milestone to reach 10 years on the airwaves in Far West Texas.
ALVAREZ2: “We’re just one of the only stations that does live tejano – even though it’s just one day – in this part of the state. I mean you gotta talk to Lubbock, San Angelo, that middle area, and of course San Antonio and all that to find any other station that actually has a day of tejano.” (0:11)
The 10-year anniversary celebration takes place August 16 at Skelton’s Runway.
