Dwight Houston Yarbrough, beloved husband, father, veteran, counselor, educator, and longtime Midland resident, passed away after a life defined by service, integrity, compassion, and unwavering faith.
He was 76.
A proud alumnus of the University of Oklahoma, Dwight earned his Ph.D. and built a distinguished career dedicated to helping others. He also served his country in the United States Air Force. Raised in Arizona, Dwight’s humble beginnings helped shape a man whose rugged exterior concealed a generous heart. He believed deeply in honesty, personal accountability, and remaining true to one’s principles. These values guided every aspect of his life, and he expected the same sincerity and integrity from those around him.
For many years, Dwight devoted his professional life to serving as a drug and alcohol counselor, offering hope, guidance, and compassion to individuals facing some of life’s greatest challenges.
Whether serving his country, supporting his family, or walking alongside those in need, Dwight lived a life marked by steadfast faith in God, an abiding love for his family, and an unwavering belief in the goodness and potential of others.
Dwight is survived by the love of his life, Nilvia Rodriguez Yarbrough, and his brother and sister.
A rosary service for Dwight will be Thursday, August 6, at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Alpine. A funeral mass takes place Friday, August 7 at 10:00 a.m., also at Our Lady of Peace with graveside and full military services to follow at Holy Angels Cemetery.
A luncheon will follow at Our Lady of Peace Parish Hall.

Organizers and activists opposing the border wall construction say contractors will begin QUOTE “clearing activity” this weekend within Big Bend National Park.
According to the conservation group Keep Big Bend Wild, contractors are set to install concrete survey markers within the sprawling West Texas park this week.

SMITH1: “It’s almost a symbolic beginning to the work happening, and obviously the markers themselves aren’t that disturbing to the environment of the park, but they signify the work is coming.” (0:12)
The Trump administration’s current plans for the park include a combination of vehicle barriers, surveillance technology and patrol roads.
Elsewhere in the Big Bend area, mancamps are being set up for construction crews working on the wall and other border security infrastructure.

The candidate filing period for the November election is open.
There are two positions – Mayor and city council representative for Ward 5. Anyone interested in running for either position can submit an application with the city.
You can pick up an application form at City Hall. The deadline to file is Monday, Aug. 17 at 5:00 p.m.

The annual event brings intimate solo performances by well-known musicians and master songwriters. This year’s lineup includes Wade Bowen, Adam Wright, Leslie Jordan, and Drew Kennedy.

Later this month (AUGUST), the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute hosts their annual BBQ and auction fundraiser.
The event helps raise money for CDRI programming throughout the next year. In addition to the silent auction, and the BBQ dinner, there will also be live music from Rick Ruiz and A Few Too Many.
The fundraiser is Saturday, Aug. 15 at 3:30 p.m.

Also this month (AUGUST), head to Front Street Books for a meet-and-greet with local author Lucy Griffith. She’s the author of the new poetry book, “Songs of the Ocotillo.”
The collection is a collaboration between Griffith and Marfa resident Darlene Marwitz. The work mixes poetry with visual art – all while paying homage to the Ocotillo.
The meet-and-greet and book signing takes place Friday, August 21 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.
