Good evening, today is Friday, August 26th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The new Alpine High School Building accepted students for the first time Tuesday and Superintendent Dr. Michelle Rinehart said she was pleased with the way it went.
She told the School Board Thursday there were some “touch and go moments” adjusting various facilities like fine-tuning the air conditioning but it was a good experience.
Demolition is expected to start on the old building next week.
The 22-million-dollar classroom building is just north of the old building, which had been in use since the 1970s.
Some work on the new building still is going on with total completion of the project now expected in November.
In other action, the School Board unanimously approved the tax rate for the current fiscal year at a dollar and 13.61 cents per $100 valuation.
It projects an increase of three dollars and ten cents a month on a $100,00 home.
School Finance Office Clay Braden said the rate was about three tenths of a cent more than the no new revenue rate, which would raise the same amount of money as last year.But increased valuations in the current inflationary period will result in about 174 thousand dollars more than last year.
And Alpine Elementary School is reminding citizens of the changes to pick-up procedures to increase efficiency.
Parents or guardians picking up only one Pre-K, Kindergarten, first or second grade student from their vehicle will line up on Circle Drive from West Avenue A.
Those picking up a third or fourth grader will line up on the right side of Brown Street.
To pick up more than one child, the carline will start on the left side of Brown Street and the color-coded sign of the youngest child must be visible.
All parents or guardians must have the color-coded sign of their child and keep it visible on their vehicle.
For your child to be admitted onto a bus, parents must complete a bus form and students may not ride the bus to the middle school to be picked up there

The Big Bend Sentinel reports this week that recent rains have changed area drought classifications but not as much as might be expected.
Last month, large swathes of Presidio and Brewster counties were declared to be under “exceptional drought,” the highest category on the U.S. Drought Monitor.
The Rio Grande’s Santa Elena Canyon had dried up in the spring and many had warned of extreme wildfire conditions.
After rains, some of it heavy in Presidio County, the drought monitor shows the area drought index now as a mix of extreme and severe drought but down from exceptional.
Last weekend, the paper reported, the banks of the Rio Grande overflowed in Presidio County and flooding overtook parts of the county, including in Big Bend Ranch State Park.
Again this year, the Border Patrol Big Bend Sector will host its annual 9/11 event at the Alpine Station to remember the lives that were lost on the fateful day of September 11, 2001.
It also will recall the heroic acts from the two aircraft hitting the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York and first responders running into the face of danger and often sudden death.
Ten years later, agents of the Alpine Station retrieved a piece of one of the destroyed buildings and it now is displayed for the public to view.
The 9/11 Memorial ceremony will include the Border Patrol’s Honor Guard and the playing of taps and bagpipes.

Para recoger a más de un niño, la línea de automóviles comenzará en el lado izquierdo de Brown Street y el letrero codificado por color del niño más pequeño debe estar visible.
Todos los padres o tutores deben tener el letrero codificado por colores de su hijo y mantenerlo visible en su vehículo.
Para que su hijo sea admitido en un autobús, los padres deben completar un formulario de autobús y los estudiantes no pueden viajar en el autobús a la escuela intermedia para ser recogidos allí.

Después de las lluvias, algunas de ellas intensas en el condado de Presidio, el monitor de sequía muestra el índice de sequía del área ahora como una combinación de sequía extrema y severa, pero por debajo de excepcional.
