Big Bend National Park reported this week that 514 thousand visitors spent more than 48 million dollars in the region last year.
The spending at Big Bend National Park and Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River supported 659 jobs in the area and had a cumulative benefit to the local economy of 56 million dollars.
The peer-reviewed visitor spending analysis was conducted by economists at the National Park Service. It showed National Parks across the country drew in nearly 24 billion dollars in direct spending by nearly 312 million park visitors in communities within 60 miles of a national park.
This spending supported 378-and-a-half thousand jobs nationally, mostly in these gateway communities. The cumulative benefit to the U.S. economy was 50.3 billion.
The downtown Alpine space most recently known as Old Gringo and the Teak Store before that is returning to life, now as Amigo, with a soft opening this weekend.
Chris Herrera reports he plans to open the new concept at 101 West Avene E at 5 th Street as Alpine’s local, neighborhood bar.
He promises a family-friendly, casual-dining restaurant with a sports bar theme, a garage arcade and game room and live entertainment most nights of the week.
That entertainment, he said, is not just music but also game nights, run clubs, dart clubs and the like. The new menu features traditional west Texas and Tex-Mex cuisine alongside a full-service bar with sides like chicken wings and fried pickles.
Another Red-Letter Event, the 37 th Annual Trappings of Texas exhibit at the Museum of the Big Bend is scheduled to open September 14 to 16.
Thirty-seven years ago, Gary Dunshee, Joel Nelson and Barnie Nelson traveled to Elko, Nevada, for the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering. While there, they saw an exhibit of cowboy gear and art. The group decided that Alpine could and should host a similar event in the cattle country of the Big Bend.
Together they created the Texas Cowboy Poetry Gathering, now the Lone Star Cowboy Poetry Gathering, and Trappings of Texas. Both events are hosted on the campus of Sul Ross State University with the home of Trappings at the Museum of the Big Bend.
The exhibit showcases well-established artists beside up-and-coming craftsmen. This will be the first time the event will include the newly-opened Emmett and Miriam McCoy building in the beautiful temporary exhibit space. The expanded space will highlight works in the Tom Lea Gallery, featuring the artist’s paintings which tell the history of beef cattle in the Americas.
Also on display will be Fred Darge work which captures ranching in the southern section of Brewster County on ranches that now are part of Big Bend National Park/ Museum Director Mary Bones said what makes Trappings such a unique event is that many of the artists are here for the entire weekend.
On Friday and Saturday, artists will work on their projects on the Cultural Events patio so visitors can see them at work and listen to some of the best storytellers in the country.

Marfa Police are seeking female subject 49-year-old Eli Ray Luna, last seen in Marfa and who may be in Alpine.
Eli is about 5-1, 117 pounds, has several tattoos and was last seen wearing a grey sweater, black leggings and white shoes. If you have seen Eli or know her whereabouts, contact the Marfa Police Department at 729-1841.

El análisis del gasto de los visitantes, revisado por pares, fue realizado por economistas del servicio del Parque Nacional. Mostró que los parques nacionales de todo el país recibieron casi 24 mil millones de dólares en gastos directos por casi 312 millones de visitantes al parque en comunidades dentro de un radio de 60 millas de un parque nacional.

La policía de Marfa está buscando a Eli Ray Luna, de 49 años, vista por última vez en Marfa y que podria estar en Alpine.
Eli mide aproximadamente 1.55, pesa 53 kg, tiene varios tatuajes y fue vista por última vez usando un suéter gris, pantalones negros y zapatos blancos.
