Good evening, today is Monday, August 22nd and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
As reported earlier here, new Alpine School Superintendent Dr. Michelle Rinehart has offered a solution to a long search for childcare in Alpine.
The Downtown Association worked through the Rio Grande Council of Governments to make it happen without success a few years ago.
The C.O.G. arranged for a non-profit to provide the cost of starting a childcare center but could not get a potential operator.
The new Alpine Community Partners and other non-profits are seeking ways to make it all happen.
The A.D.A. was concerned with starting new businesses if potential owners could not get someone to look after pre-school-age children so their parents could run the business.
Schools have the same problem with teachers.
Dr. Rinehart has offered use of part of the administration building in the old high school for childcare and to seek grants to pay for its operation.
They are working with Sul Ross, its Small Business Development Center, Big Bend Regional Medical Center and others.
The Big Bend Sentinel reports that the Marfa Independent School District Board has called an election for a 57-million-dollar bond issue in the November General Election.
If approved, it would provide a new kindergarten through 12th campus, a career and technology addition to the high school and other district-wide improvements.
Superintendent Oscar Aguero said it is the largest amount ever requested and could increase academic and career training and improve the facility’s safety for all students and staff.
Property taxes on a $200,000 home would increase by a rate of more than $46 a month.
The bonds would be in addition to outstanding debt the district is still paying off for two bonds passed in 2003 and 2007 with a balance of about six million dollars.
Democratic candidates Beto O’Rurke and John Lira will be in Alpine Sunday September 4 at 12:30 p.m. at the Granada Theatre.
Other state candidates may also appear in support of Beto’s Drive for Texas campaign, which has been traveling across the state to 70 public events.
Lira received Beto’s endorsement in his campaign against Tony Gonzales for our 23rd congressional district.
Lira: “I’ve always looked up to him as a member of congress and how genuine he was when he was on the trail and how he really gives everything he got and everything he has. I’ve tried to model in a lot of ways my energy and my message to be authentic and genuine as high energy just like his out here on the trail.”

Alpine Animal Services will host a pet adoption event Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 2900 Old Marathon Road in Alpine as part of the Clear the Shelters initiative.
Guests will be able to have some food, participate in playgroups and visit pets currently at the Alpine Animal Services shelter.
If you find the right pet, you’ll be able to adopt them at half the price of a usual adoption right then and there.
Clear the Shelters is an annual nationwide pet adoption and shelter donation campaign that has helped more than 700-thousand pets find new homes since 2015.

Están trabajando con Sul Ross, su Centro de Desarrollo de Pequeñas Empresas, el Centro Médico Regional Big Bend y otros.
El Big Bend Sentinel informa que la Junta del Distrito Escolar Independiente de Marfa convocó una elección para una emisión de bonos de 57 millones de dólares en las Elecciones Generales de noviembre.
Si se aprueba, proporcionaría un nuevo campus de jardín de infantes a duodécimo grado, una adición de carreras y tecnología a la escuela secundaria y otras mejoras en todo el distrito.
