Jim Burnett, a former Alpine High School faculty member, passed away Sunday following an illness. He was 71.
A Sul Ross graduate, Mr. Burnett spent most of his life in public education, and taught welding at Alpine High School from 2006 through 2008.
Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 6 until 8pm at Heartland Funeral Home in Early, Texas.
Funeral services for Jim Burnett will follow Friday morning at 10 at the First Baptist Church in Bangs, Texas.

During last night’s city council meeting, officials discussed the maintenance and upkeep of the city’s fire hydrants.
Fire chief James Etchison said the city has so far reviewed roughly 250 of the hydrants in Alpine and about 10 percent of them aren’t working.
ETCHISON: “This is a 600-pound gorilla that’s going to beat us very bad, because it is so extensive.”
The city discussed options to address the maintenance issues – including and what to do going forward.
Mark Rose is with the Alpine Emergency Services Board. His group is putting together a review of the hydrants and will present that to the council at an upcoming meeting.
ROSE1: “I think the fixing part of it we need to have some more conversations–and I think you will want to have some conversations–about the best way to do that, so everyone’s interest, the communities as well as the council’s, is protected.”
At the end of the meeting, the council went into executive session to review and discuss applicants for city manager.
The council made no action after coming out of that executive session.

Blue Origin has announced their next test flight. The space tourism company–owned by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos–says it will send an uncrewed flight with over 40 scientific and research payloads on board on Saturday, August 23. This is the company’s 35th flight – and will take place from its facility north of Van Horn.

Next week, the Brewster County Groundwater Conservation District meets. And on the agenda for the meeting is an update on a study of the Santa Elena aquifer, which runs under much of the area in Big Bend National Park.
The meeting is Thursday, August 28 at 9 a.m. at the Marathon Community Center.

Next month, Sul Ross State University will host a training for people looking to begin or further a career in healthcare.
Beginning September 8, Workforce Solutions Borderplex, along with Odessa College and Big Bend Regional Medical Center, will provide certified medical assistant training for residents in the Big Bend.
This NHA-accredited program offers in-person and hybrid classes, and will be held Monday, September 8 through Thursday, September 11 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Course fees and tuition are fully covered through a Workforce Solutions Borderplex grant, making this opportunity accessible to qualified applicants at no cost.
Enrollment is first-come, first-served, and space is limited. An interview process will be conducted for all candidates.

Jim Burnett, exprofesor de la Preparatoria de Alpine, falleció el domingo tras una enfermedad. Tenía 71 años.
Graduado de Sul Ross, el Sr. Burnett dedicó la mayor parte de su vida a la educación pública y enseñó soldadura en la Preparatoria de Alpine del 2006 al 2008.
El velorio se llevará a cabo el jueves por la tarde, de 6:00 p. m. a 8:00 p. m., en la Funeraria Heartland en Early, Texas.

Durante la reunión del consejo municipal de anoche (MARTES), los funcionarios discutieron el mantenimiento y la conservación de los hidrantes de la ciudad.
El jefe de bomberos, James Etchison, dijo que la ciudad ha revisado hasta la fecha aproximadamente 250 hidrantes en Alpine y que aproximadamente el 10% no funcionan.
