Customs and Border Protection commissioner Rodney Scott has met with area officials as he continues his tour of the Big Bend this week. Commissioner Scott is visiting the region for what he’s called a “personal, on-the-ground evaluation” as his agency has temporarily paused its border security plans for Big Bend National Park.
CBP stopped its construction within the national park for the time being following bipartisan backlash to the work.
State Sen. Cesar Blanco is one of the officials who met with Commissioner Scott. Blanco’s district includes parts of the Big Bend area.
BLANCO1: “We appreciate the pause, we do appreciate the opportunity to have our say as a community in West Texas and the Big Bend region to talk about what we believe border security should look like. // Now they’re going to take all of our input, go back to the drawing board and come back to see what they’re gonna do.” (0:16)
As part of CBP’s border security infrastructure plans, Big Bend National Park is currently set to receive 17 miles of vehicle barriers, new patrol roads and additional surveillance technology.
Outside of the national park the agency is still moving forward with its plans for up to 175 miles of 30-foot tall steel fencing in Hudspeth, Jeff Davis and Presidio counties.

The Museum of the Big Bend at Sul Ross State University in Alpine has been awarded a grant of just over $400,000.
The funding – from the Institute of Museum and Library Services – will help the museum expand its educational programming through a new initiative focused on history and culture. The grant will also support a new position at the museum which will be tasked with developing programs using the museum’s collection of more than 25,000 objects to align with school curricula.
In a press release announcing the grant award, the museum’s director Emily Wilkinson said the funding is an “important investment in the museum’s ability to service the people of the Big Bend.”

At the end of the week (AUGUST), head to Front Street Books for a meet-and-greet with local author Lucy Griffith. She’s the author of the new poetry book, “Songs of the Ocotillo.”
The collection is a collaboration between Griffith and Marfa resident Darlene Marwitz. The work mixes poetry with visual art – all while paying homage to the Ocotillo.
The meet-and-greet and book signing takes place Friday, August 21 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

This weekend, Skelton’s Runway and the Pine Cornhole will host a benefit tournament for the DPS trooper that was involved in a head-on collision outside the city in June.
There will be live music, a BBQ lunch and cornhole and softball tournaments. All proceeds go directly to trooper Zach Vasquez to aid him in his recovery.
The tournament starts Friday, Aug. 21 – sign up starts at 5:30 p.m. and bags fly at 6:30. Entry is $80 per team and there are trophies for the top three finishers.
The softball tournament will be Saturday, Aug. 22 – teams can be anywhere from 10 to 12 players, and entry is $350 per team. Sign up is at 7:00 a.m. and the game starts at 8:00 a.m.

Next week, the Big Bend Regional Hospital District will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Presidio Rural Health Center.
Once built, the 6,500-square-foot health center will feature a medical clinic, laboratory services and two living spaces for visiting medical care providers.
The groundbreaking ceremony is Wednesday, Aug. 26 at 12:30 p.m. across from the Presidio Activity Center.

In September, the Alpine Chapter of the Mule Deer Foundation will host its third annual banquet.
The fundraising event will be Saturday, Sept. 12 th at the Alpine Civic Center. You can meet some of the group’s members, enjoy a catered meal and hang around for a chance to win some
great prizes. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
There will also be games, raffles and a live auction where you can win rifles, pistols, shotguns and more prizes.

El comisionado de la Oficina de Aduanas y Protección Fronteriza (CBP), Rodney Scott, se ha reunido con funcionarios de la zona mientras continúa su recorrido por el área de Big Bend esta semana. El comisionado Scott visita la región para realizar lo que ha denominado una “evaluación personal y directa sobre el terreno”, dado que su agencia ha suspendido temporalmente los planes de seguridad fronteriza para el Parque Nacional Big Bend.
CBP detuvo las obras de construcción dentro del parque nacional por el momento, tras las críticas bipartidistas recibidas por el proyecto.
El senador estatal César Blanco es uno de los funcionarios que se reunió con el comisionado Scott. El distrito de Blanco abarca partes de la zona de Big Bend.

Como parte de los planes de infraestructura de seguridad fronteriza de la CBP, está previsto que el Parque Nacional Big Bend reciba 17 millas de barreras para vehículos, nuevas vías de patrullaje y tecnología de vigilancia adicional.
Fuera del parque nacional, la agencia sigue adelante con sus planes para instalar hasta 175 millas de vallas de acero de 30 pies de altura en los condados de Hudspeth, Jeff Davis y Presidio.

Este fin de semana, Skelton’s Runway y Pine Cornhole organizarán un torneo benéfico para el agente del DPS que sufrió una colisión frontal a las afueras de la ciudad el pasado mes de junio.

La próxima semana, el Distrito Hospitalario Regional de Big Bend celebrará la ceremonia de inicio de obras del nuevo Centro de Salud Rural de Presidio.
Una vez construido, el centro de salud —de 6.500 pies cuadrados— contará con una clínica médica, servicios de laboratorio y dos espacios residenciales para profesionales de la salud visitantes.
La ceremonia de inicio de obras tendrá lugar el miércoles 26 de agosto a las 12:30 p. m., frente al Centro de Actividades de Presidio (Presidio Activity Center).
