Following the temporary pause of construction activity for the government’s border security plans in Big Bend National Park, one of the largest conservation nonprofits in the country says the project should’ve never started to begin with.
In a statement, the Sierra Club’s Jackie Feinberg called the project QUOTE “destructive” and that the Trump administration “must make this pause permanent and repair the damage already done.”
TheSierra Club says it calls on Congress to defend the Big Bend and ensure public land and waters nationwide are protected for the next generations.
The head of Customs and Border Protection Rodney Scott is in the Big Bend, where he’s meeting with local leaders to evaluate the region’s rugged and difficult terrain, balancing border security needs and protecting the national park.
The Trump administration’s $1.7 billion border security plan for Big Bend National Park involves vehicle barriers, patrol roads and new surveillance technology.

Yesterday (MONDAY) the Presidio County Sheriff’s Office received reports of an active shooter that ended up being QUOTE “intentional backfire from a pickup truck.”
According to the sheriff’s office, there was no active shooter and no threat to the public.
Calls came in around 10:26 p.m. Monday – and multiple agencies including the sheriff’s office, the Presidio Police Department and Border Patrol responded.

At the end of the week, the Museum of the Big Bend will host the ‘True Story of the Desk,’ a day of hiking and storytelling.
Hear the real story of the iconic “Desk on Hancock Hill” from the man who hauled it up the mountain 45 years ago.
Jim Kitchen is returning to Alpine to lead guided hikes up Hancock Hill and he will be giving a talk at the Museum of the Big Bend as well.
The event is free and open to the public on Friday, Aug. 21 at 1:30 p.m. in the Museum Arts and Cultural Center.
The hikes will be from Friday, Aug. 21 to Monday, Aug. 24 at 7:00 a.m. if you want to go up to the “Desk” with Jim.

Also, on Friday, head to Front Street Books for a meet-and-greet with local author Lucy Griffith. She’s the author of the new poetry book, “Songs of the Ocotillo.”
The collection is a collaboration between Griffith and Marfa resident Darlene Marwitz. The work mixes poetry with visual art – all while paying homage to the Ocotillo.
The meet-and-greet and book signing takes place Friday, August 21 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

On Saturday, head to the Fort Davis Public Library for an hour of watercolor painting! Instruction will be through video, and all materials are provided by the Friends of Jeff Davis County Library.

In the fall (OCOTBER), the 5th-annual Big Bend Bluegrass Festival returns to Alpine, bringing the tradition of bluegrass and American-roots music to the Big Bend.
The event, which encourages the preservation and enjoyment of the music style with free workshops and live performances, will be Friday, October 2 and Saturday October 3 at the Alpine Civic Center.
