A celebration of life for Brian Kokernot will be at Unitarian Universalists of the Big Bend Church at 1308 North 5th Street at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Brian lived in Alpine off and on from the early 1970s until 2020 and attended Sul Ross State University. He died in Austin on January 4. The service will be led by his good friend, the Reverend Robert Flanders.
Sheriff Ronny Dodson told the Alpine Avalanche this week he is preparing for a series of meetings in the county over school safety issues.
New state legislation, effective September 1, requires sheriffs of counties with fewer than 350 thousand residents to have semi-annual meetings to discuss school safety. The action stemmed from the May, 2022, school shooting at Uvalde. Alpine has memories of its own in September, 2016, in which the shooter was the only fatality. Dodson told the paper there are several school districts in Brewster County and all who receive public funding are required to attend.
He also sent out notifications to all law enforcement agencies in the area that would respond to an active shooter situation. As a result of the 2016 shooting, Alpine was one of the first districts to create “school resource officers.”
These are generally Brewster County deputies assigned to a school and the school district reimburses the Sheriff’s Office for the cost of these employees.
The City of Alpine has announced its next Warrant Roundup, giving those who have outstanding cases before municipal court a chance to clear them up and, perhaps, avoid jail time.
Individuals are asked to contact the court and resolve the issue before September 11. The notice lists about 74 citizens who have outstanding warrants and if your name is not on the list but think it should be, call 837-0808 or email Court.clerk@CityofAlpine.com
The annual Davis Mountain Hummingbird Celebration this weekend is in a new venue that allows indoor space for things like the silent auction.
Cecilia Riley, the coordinator of the event and president of the Trans-Pesos Bird Conservation Board told the Alpine Avalanche this year it will be at the High Frontier. She said the air-conditioned space, donated by Tim Crowley, is off Highway 118 south of Fort Davis and across from the Chihuahua Desert Research Institute.
Fort Davis Chamber of Commerce President Reagan Stone told us the turnout promises to be the largest ever. He said the registration period has long past but some free events will be open to everyone.
The recent drought has caused some problems for the area but it should help the festival. Birds who can normally get a drink just about anywhere are more likely to use event feeding stations.

Coming up for Alpine is the Big Bend Gun and Knife Show scheduled for September 2 and 3 at Pete P. Gallego Center on the Sul Ross campus.
It is hosted by the Alpine Lions Club and it will be open from 9 to 6 Saturday, September 2, and 10 to 4 on Sunday. General Admission is seven dollars and free to those 12 and younger, active military and Sul Ross students with I.D.
The Lions, which traditionally collect unused eyeglasses for the needy will give a dollar off for each donation.
