August 17th

Transcript:

Good evening, today is Wednesday, August 17th and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.

Funeral services for Maria Gonzales of Alpine will be at 9:30 Saturday morning at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, where she was a member. She was 92.

Maria was born in Alpine on November 5, 1929, and worked as a hospital nurse in Albuquerque, New Mexico, for many years before returning to Alpine about six years ago.

She is survived by two sons, a daughter and a brother.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to cancer research.

The Alpine City Council approved its 15-point-4-million-dollar budget on second and final reading after a public hearing Tuesday and adopted a new tax rate on first reading.

A public hearing also preceded first reading on the tax rate of 46.6326 per 100-dollar valuation, down from the current rate of 50-point-8345 cents.

City Manager Megan Antrim declined to name a total two weeks ago, saying her figures were somewhat different from those presented by Tax Assessor-Collector Sylvia Vega.

After reconciling the differences, the tax rate includes 43.0625 for maintenance and operations and 3.5701 cents for debt service.

The tax rate will raise more money for M. and O. than last year’s rate. Increased valuations have allowed a lower rate.

Antrim said later in the meeting the final payment on existing city debt will be made later next month.

In other action, both Police Chief Darrell Losoya and Utilities Director Keith Segar said they had lost employees lately.

Like most other employers, the city is finding it difficult to keep employees and find new ones.

And Council discussed without taking action a suggestion by Councilor Chris Rodriguez that customers should be able to pay utility bills online.

Former Councilor Rick Stephens said he has several companies and the city is the only one still using mailed bills and payments, saying electronic billing is much better.

Antrim said the idea is under consideration.

We reported Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning that heavy rains overnight Monday caused roof damage at the New Alpine High School and later heard it was just a door left open.

But Superintendent Dr. Michelle Rinehart told us of one minor leak in an annex and flooding in the old building that will become a courtyard when the old building is demolished.

She said the sudden rain caused water on floors in several areas and it was what she called “all hands on deck” to remove the water and repair minor damages.

Active shooter drills are being conducted by law enforcement agencies on all campuses this week but the water damage did not affect those drills, Rinehart said.

The next Family Barn Dance by the Fort Davis Chamber of Commerce will be from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday September 3 at the Kelly Outdoor Pavilion.

Everyone all ages is welcome to attend free dance lessons and enjoy food from the Highland Hereford Café with live music by fiddler Doug Moreland.

Ten dollar a person or 25 dollar per family donations are suggested but attendees can give what they wish.

The event is B.Y.O.B. For more information, visit dougmoreland.com/shows.html.

And Sul Ross State University will showcase former Sul Ross State football player Mike Flynt’s debut on the silver screen in the upcoming film “The Senior.”

Flynt made history by becoming the oldest person to play N.C.A.A. college football when he returned to the gridiron at the age of 59 to complete his last year of eligibility.

Back in 1971, Flynt was a junior and coming off a stellar season when a fist fight with a teammate led to him getting kicked off the team at the start of his senior season.

It wasn’t until 2007 when Flynt came back to finish his career at Sul Ross.

Directed by Rod Lurie and produced by Mark Ciardi, “The Senior” is set to be released sometime in late November.

I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez and this has been your local and area news report for KVLF 98.7 FM, 1240 AM and KALP 92.7 FM brought to you by your Big Bend Regional Medical Center. Have a great evening everybody.
